Feedback and Bug Reports for Porteus v2.1 RC2

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

Hi,

I was told that CGroup [kernel option] will be enabled in Porteus 2.1...
It is not the case. :shock:
It is enabled with debian and CentOS for example... :)

the rpm2xzm does not run as it should in 2.0, if nothing had been changed it would be the same with 2.1.
I was forced to repair the rpm2xzm command... :fool:

Because I know how to deal with linux, it is not that hard to make all the changes, but for people who would like to use linux, of course they will just stop using linux for a long time...
I suppose that it is not what we do want to.

I expect a RC3 so I could make the test with all the features correctly implemented... (CACertificate, GPG, CGroups, *2xzm, sudoers, etc.)

Thanks
I like Slackware so I tried Porteus...

@fanthom, I found the reason for my problems with USB mounts and suspend. I saved my settings to module, actually 2-3 times. The problem is that modules 2 and 3, can add new files to settings, but not remove the files in the preceding module 1. So, I remove some files and save changes as module 2 - after reboot I still have those files. This leads to mind-boggling behaviours. :(

Now, one more bug report. I use MATE DE. !!!!!EDIT!!!!! after saving guest session changes to .dat file and rebooting, I could not login as guest, only as root. /usr/bin/xauth was complaining about timeout on locking /home/guest/.Xauthority file. Turns out guest did not have write permissions on /home/guest. (it belonged to group root). I cannot understand how this happened, but I fixed it with setting folder permissions to user guest rwx, group to users rwx. Now I can login. Will see if I have more problems with this.

I was told that CGroup [kernel option] will be enabled in Porteus 2.1...
It is not the case. :shock:
rc2 is not final. anyway cgroup is limited to the items required by:

Code: Select all

CONFIG_SCHED_AUTOGROUP=y
the rpm2xzm does not run as it should in 2.0, if nothing had been changed it would be the same with 2.1.
I was forced to repair the rpm2xzm command... :fool:
please share url for non working rpm and diff with your fix
I expect a RC3
2.1 final is going live tomorrow/tuesday

@Rava
sorry - must have missed that. please setup 'changes=' so and try to recreate crash -> recover log files from changes.

@solnyshok
1) agree that using many xzm's with saved changes can be confusing (in which module this damn file is placed?) that's why users should stick to just one xzm (update it frequently) or use 'changes=EXIT:' where whiteouts are handled properly.
2) would be nice if you could track this /home/guest permission problem down as it may be a showstopper for newbs.
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

Hi Tom!
I think I found another bug, maybe not Porteus fault, but upstream, kde4, because it is ok with my last own version of kde4 (4.9.5), but happens with 2.1 - rc2:

I install the application draftsight, and the file icons display with a gray question mark instead of the corresponding icon; then I go to "System Settings" and do the necessary tune up to get the icons to display. ¡But they display incorrectly! :%)

I will explain: this application has three different file types, *.dwg, *.dwt and *.dxf. All three settings are ok in "System Settings", but in the praxis all *.dwg get the wrong icon!, They get the dwt-icon if the fs is ntfs and get the dxf-icon in ext4??. The *.dxf and the *.dwt display correctly.

Image

This happens in this 32-bit machine; tomorrow I will check with the 64-bit at the uni (with compatibility module). I will report back in 24h.

Regards

William.

EDIT: I am sorry, Tom, but I gave you a bad clue; Te error occurs also in my kde4-4.9.5, just the other way around....
Image

I will keep researching to find the bug. You have enough to do :)

EDIT2: The bug seems to be in Dolphin: I do a search with "Find Files/Folders" and the icons display correctly. I drag and drop any dwg-file to a directory and in the directory it displays wrong (dwt)!. I will check with Konqueror...

Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).

Another bug in 2.1 RC2, XFCe version:

When I want to save a GIF in mtpaint as animated gif, I get this error message:

Code: Select all

Error 127 reported when trying to run gifsicle --colors 256 -w -o2 -d 2 [....]
And gifsicle is not installed:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/mnt/xy# type gifsicle
bash: type: gifsicle: not found
root@porteus:/mnt/xy# gifsicle
bash: gifsicle: command not found
Cheers!

I have a question.
Is '$a.xzm' a directory ?

line 228
"[ -d $mlmi/$a.xzm ] && acted=1 && deactivate $mlmi/$a.xzm"
of update_local_modules() function
in /opt/porteus-scripts/porteus-package-manager file
of Porteus-LXDE-v2.1-rc2-i486.iso

@neko
if i follow brokenman's thinking correctly: 'mlmi' can be translated as '/mnt/live/memory/images' so answer is 'yes' - '$a.xzm' is a directory.

@fanthom
Thank you for your answer.

Now, I am modifying porteus-package-manager for Japanese locale.
I thought that ".xzm" was the suffix for "Squashfs filesystem" in Porteus system.
So, I asked.

I'm sorry! I'm new here and just found this thread...I just made a post in the bug reports forum about 2.1 RC2.

I also didn't mention there, but I'm using razor-qt 32bit.

Fanthom followed the logic correctly. $mlmi in this case is pointing to the live file system which is a directory with the same name as the real module.
Now, I am modifying porteus-package-manager for Japanese locale.
This is great news. It has been translated into italian already so please let me know when you have this translation completed and i can meld it into the language selector application. When someone choose Japanese through the language selection tool it will also download the japanese PPM.
How do i become super user?

Dear all,

glad to see 2.1-rc released. Just test it on my new Mac pro and wifi card can not be recognized. New Mac pro uses the Broadcom chip BCM4331 but porteus b43 module can not be loaded normally with some files lost.Hope this can be solved while the 2.1 released.

thanks

@cchuang
broadcom-sta ('wl' driver) is our default. i thought it covers BCM4331 chipset as per:
http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

if you still want to use b43 then you may have to extract proprietary firmware manually as per linked doc (our open sourced firmware may be not enough).
please provide /var/log/dmesg and i'll have a look.

thanks.

Re: Feedback and Bug Reports for Porteus v2.1 RC2

Post#135 by fanthom » 08 Aug 2013, 11:56

weird but i cant find any reference to any network interface in dmesg.
please do as follows:
a) post output of 'lspci -knn'
b) run 'modprobe wl' and then 'modprobe b43'
c) post dmesg again (please use CODE tag)
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.
