Feedback for Porteus version 2.0 RC2

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

Hi, 3G mania continues :-\/ I ran a live session of the rc2 KDE 64 bit and dropped in usb_modeswitch to /usr/sbin. No joy. Logged out as guest and in as root. Nada. Killed modem-manager and restarted it. Nix. Gave up.

I see there is also usb_modeswitch_dispatcher. Not sure what this does exactly but perhaps also needs to be included?

Now running

@claude
booting with 'copy2ram nohd' cheatcode on a frugal install (on hard drive partition) does not automatically umount the hd partition on which the porteus directories reside as it should,
ok - will check it.
Please note that with the 'nomodeset' cheatcode I get an Xwindows resolution of only 1024x768, which is a much smaller screen than the usual 1400x1050 resolution that is usually automatically configured on this dell inspiron 8200 with Nvidia GEFORCE4GO graphic card.
yes - KMS does not work so resolution is not native.
can you change it manually with GUI tool? if not then you are limited to VESA driver i'm afraid.

@gnomic
Unclear about 'pc-suite', that's a phone setting? Or somewhere in NM?
yes. phone let's me select to work as storage or a modem so even usb_modeswitch is not necessary for it i believe.
I ran a live session of the rc2 KDE 64 bit and dropped in usb_modeswitch to /usr/sbin. No joy.
binary may be not enough.
please try with full usb_modeswitch package converted to xzm as it contains udev rules and modem database.

Cheers
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

fanthom... who is the one maintaining these details in XFCe Porteus, you or Ahau?

Since you not addressed the below, I quote myself to bump the unanswered stuff:

Gnome-Mplayer and Stereo or Surround per default
Rava wrote:The default, like with 2.0rc2 of XFCe version, is set to surround, aka 5.1 or 6.1 sound. When you watch a surround movie with just stereo sound attached, you only will hear the surround sound,no voices.

When you set it to be stereo only instead, all users with surround will complain that surround is not working out of the box...

In my book... either Porteus is able to check if surround is attached and change the settings at boot time (preferable, but also prone to bugs, and it makes startup a tad bit slower), or keep it at the default settings as: surround.
Then we can add a line to the main read me file that addresses the issue. :)
Alsa equalizer
Rava wrote:Ahau wrote:
Rava, is playing everything in gnome-mplayer a suitable option for you? I might even consider dropping audacious entirely if there is no functionality or convenience added over gnome-mplayer.

Audacious has 1 advantage: an equalizer.

I know that alsa can also have one, but I failed to compile it and get it working with Porteus...

Anyone succeeded here? Sure, a systemwide Alsa equalizer is better than just the build-in audacious one...
Cheers!

I meant to specify, not mounted under /mnt/sda*, but under /mnt/live/mnt/sda*.

No, it cannot be changed, as the max resolution available is now 1024x768. However, on the the same model inspiron with ATI Radeon 9000 card I get a proper 1400x1050 res. What can I do to get this same proper 1400x1050 res. with the Nvidia GEFORCE4GO card? I tried Porteus v1.1 and it produces the native proper 1400x1050 res. on the inspiron with the Nvidia card...

I'm having the same issue. I'm blocked at 1024x768 screen resolution on Porteus only.

Also, why when I click on window reduce button, the current playing file is switched to 'paused' mode until I display the SMPlayer window as current focus window?

3G modem continued

"binary may be not enough.
please try with full usb_modeswitch package converted to xzm as it contains udev rules and modem database."

Sorry, any idea where I could find such a thing? Not sure I am clever enough to work it out, especially since this is nearly release time. I need to check Slackware repository?

@claude
nohd + copy2ram is fixed now.
i also fixed the issue where removable media had 2+ partitions and only booting one was unmounted (probably att's case)

regarding Geforce4Go card - you could try official nVidia driver from legacy branch:
http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux-disp ... river.html
but it will be hard to find a patch for kernel-3.7.x.
best chance is in Debian repo.

or you could go with old and unaccelerated 'nv' driver:
http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.slackw ... i486-1.txz

make sure that you blacklist nouveau with this package:
http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.slackw ... arch-1.txz
(or just create a file in /etc/modprobe.d/ which blacklist nouveau driver)

@Hamza
as spoken on Gmail (posting here for others) your issue is here:

Code: Select all

[ 35.390] (WW) NVIDIA(GPU-0): Unable to read EDID for display device CRT-1
and google has many threads marked as SOLVED but seems that one has to create xorg.conf manually.
affected users should search for:

Code: Select all

 NVIDIA Unable to read EDID
to find possible solution.

btw: when i bought my new 24 inch LCD i also had troubles with getting native 1920x1080 resolution on VGA cable (my GPU had only DVI socket and i had to use DVI->VGA converter). all the problems were solved when i got a DVI cable. hardware could also be a problem in some cases.

@gnomic
please get full usb_modeswitch package from slackware repo:
http://ftp.heanet.ie/mirrors/ftp.slackw ... 6_64-2.txz

Cheers
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

On my Toshiba Satellite Laptop the sound via HDMI is not working: (XFCe version... me thinks this is still the right thread, yes?)

With Porteus 1.2 I had to switch on the HDMI sound devices via the different Sound Mixer / Volume Control of XFCe. But the new one opens a terminal with alsamixer now.

When I select the NVidia Card via F6, I get the 4 HDMI devices, listed as "S/PDIF" "S/PDIF 1" "S/PDIF 2" and "S/PDIF 3"

All are switched off, and I cannot access the help menu of alsamixer, cause instead the XFCe or Porteus windows pops up asking me if I want to open the XFCe help file. Which I sure not want, I want to open the terminal program, here = alsamixer help...

So... how do I switch on the HDMI device? usually with 1.2 it was 1:9, so

Code: Select all

mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=1.9 soundfile
would just work fine, but for now, I have no sound at all.

I want it via the Full HD TV screen / via HDMI, and like I said, it used to run with the above, or with this asound.conf:

Code: Select all

 pcm.!default {
      type plug
      slave.pcm {
              type hw
              card 1
              device 9
      }
 }
But dum dum me could not figure out how to switch on the HDMI device. How can that be done that it is switched on every time I boot Porteus?
Cheers!

Hi rava,

sorry for the slow responses, I've had some family illness issues keeping me busy.

Fanthom maintains gnome-mplayer because it is common across all desktops (in 002-xorg.xzm) and I maintain audacious ( in 0091-xfce-apps.xzm).

try using 'man alsamixer' in a terminal for help on alsamixer. 'alsamixer --help' will give info too.

Try 'alsamixer -c 1' or perhaps 'alsamixer -c 1 -D 9' to specify your card/device. you can also hit f6 in alsamixer to change between cards. I have searched high and low for a good gui mixer, but they all have lots of dependencies or are ugly, lack functions, etc.

I am still trying to figure out how to handle instances where multiplre pci sound devices use the same driver. udev rules should be able to do it but I haven't found a working example for this. If the above does not work, please try closing volumeicon, then open a terminal and unload/reload your sound driver:

rmmod snd-hda-intel
wait one second
modprobe snd-hda-intel

check 'aplay -l' to see if your hdmi card has moved to device 0. if not, unload/reload again. this may not ever work, but it is worth a shot, especially if you notice these devices are sometimes loaded in reverse order on bootup.

I hope this helps!

by the way, what equalizer did yiu try compiling? maybe it is one i have not tried yet.
Please take a look at our online documentation, here. Suggestions are welcome!

Would it take alot of work to add to the final version of 2.0 changing the color scheme (maybe a dark red border) to thunar when it's running in Super User Mode? When I have multiple thunar windows open, sometimes I forget which one is in Super User Mode.

Thanks :)

3G issue again. Downloaded file you suggested and using gui made it xzm, then double-clicked to activate module. NetworkManager remained unresponsive, but after I logged out as guest and in again as root, mobile broadband was activated and I was able to connect to the ISP - so currently using 3G to send this. Thanks for your help and this should be working in 2.0 final with addition of usb_modeswitch. Do you wish me to confirm it works as user guest? This was all in a live session of KDE4.

root@porteus:~# ls -Fail /usr/sbin | grep mode

No problem, buddy, RL should always come first! :) Hope all are better now.

Are details like this (about more programs) somewhere documented so we folks know whom best to address?
Ahau wrote:try using 'man alsamixer' in a terminal for help on alsamixer. 'alsamixer --help' will give info too.
Or I just have gone to a virtual terminal and used F1 there. xD

I first try this, and when it not works the other part with rmmod snd-hda-intel ...

But... I prefer a solution with asound.conf, cause this way it is handy to be put in the rootcopy folder for just for the right machine / PC...

This one:

http://www.thedigitalmachine.net/alsaequal.html Alsaequal:
Alsaequal is a real-time adjustable equalizer plugin for ALSA. It can be adjusted using an ALSA compatible mixer, like alsamixergui or alsamixer.

Alsaequal uses the Eq CAPS LADSPA Plugin as it's default equalizer but you can change it to use almost any LADSPA plugin, like mbeq from the swh-plugin package. Though alsaequal is primarily intended to be used as an equalizer you should be able to use it to control any LADSPA plugin. It's similar in functionality to the LADSPA plugin provided with ALSA but allows for real-time controls as opposed to static controls defined in the asoundrc file.
The only dependency seems to be the CAPS LADSPA Package...

Then again, this blog post https://patrick-nagel.net/blog/archives/180 about that very mixers says:
Update (2012-06-16): Having the .asoundrc in place causes Skype to crash after a few seconds (see also this Gentoo Forums post).
*sigh*
Cheers!

3G - Switched from root back to guest. NM was still showing ISP link for 3G but guest didn't seem able to use it, link would not activate, until the ISP was selected anew with the sequence of dialogues, ie country, provider etc. Still running session in which usb_modeswitch was activated.

guest@porteus:~$ uptime
08:45:26 up 4:15, 1 user, load average: 0.29, 0.16, 0.05

I have a problem with Porteus 64bit 2.0 RC2 : It also automounts the USB stick from where it was loaded!
This happens even if I use the "copy2ram" boot parameter.
The problem with this is, that I cannot unmount the bootable USB stick, it says "resource busy".
I cannot find the program that keeps the USB stick open, tho. I tried to find that program with "lsof" , but I could not find anything.
Just to unplug the stick seems to be a bit rude.
