@fanthom -- no, gvfs is not in 32-bit's 002-xorg.xzm, razor must be using something else (if anything) for trash. I added it back in to the 32-bit Xfce module directly.

@Rava and fanthom -- yes, audacious-plugins is included in Porteus-Xfce. I've included the official slackware txz packages for audacious and its plugins to avoid having to mess with all the various extensions, plugins, and filetypes. It looks to me like these official slackware packages do not compile in support for ffmpeg because ffmpeg itself is not included in Slackware (license issues are to blame, I would imagine). Since there is no ffmpeg support, m4a and wma files will not play in audacious, and I do not plan to add ffmpeg into Porteus-Xfce due to its size and the same potential license issues (not to mention the fact that mplayer can already handle them). As fanthom mentioned, gnome-mplayer supports these filetypes with its own built-in ffmpeg decoder.

Rava, is playing everything in gnome-mplayer a suitable option for you? I might even consider dropping audacious entirely if there is no functionality or convenience added over gnome-mplayer.

Regarding playlists, it does appear that audacious does not support the csv format. I poked around a bit, and it does support the following: asx, audpl, m3u, pls, and xspf. I don't use playlists, are any of these portable to other players the same way as csv?

Thanks!

From personal experience, it seems m3u can be imported, exported or played by most notable music players.

Hi,

I tried out Porteus RC2 64bit.
One time, I got a kernel panic, but I could not reproduce the problem, but I vaguely guess it's got to do with the "zram=10%" boot parameter that I tried out on my 4GB-ram system.

The other, VERY annoying thing is, it also automounts the USB-stick, from which it was booted (/dev/sdd1 in my case). Despite I use the "copy2ram" parameter, my USB-stick keeps being automounted.
I cannot remove the stick, I get the error "device busy". And I cannot find out which program keeps accessing the stick! - I tried "lsof" to find the offending program, etc. - no luck. Cannot find it.

Furthermore, one time, when I was just typing "ls -al" in the konsole, I got a very strange output on the ".gvfs" directory. It looked like that:

d????????? ? ? ? ? ? .gvfs

Here is the screenshot: http://666kb.com/i/cbjk2a1f4f3fo5t41.jpg

No idea what that means. Suggestions welcome!

Audacious has 1 advantage: an equalizer.

I know that alsa can also have one, but I failed to compile it and get it working with Porteus...

Anyone succeeded here? Sure, a systemwide Alsa equalizer is better than just the build-in audacious one...

I think pls and m3u are quite common, but sure not as portable than csv would be.

Still... audacious should tell us what file format you can use in the "save file" menu, yes?

To respond to questions regarding Porteus 32bit Razor.
1- how to boot in ROOT ? did you change cheatcodes !
Cheatcodes are the same. You will still boot into root, but gdm will not allow booting 'automatically' into root as a security precaution. Perhaps this will change in future editions. If security isn't a concern for you, just put a really easy and fast to type password.

2- will be better to add CPU monitor beside the clock in corner.
Personal preference. I have 4 processors and don't like monitors. I can tell when something is maxing out by the sound of my fans.

3- how to add keyboard layout language!, also I can not add from Porteus settings !
The final v2.0 will bring back a newer version of qxkb where you can add and remove languages. It is still buggy, but it has the best bugs of a lot of buggy options for keyboard layout switchers.

4- need to update firefox, also I think screenshoot addons is useful if you can add it because it's allow to capture all page.
I believe Fanthom will push some last minute updates, but i have 18.0.2 here which reports to be the latest.

5- add Skype, please!
Too big. 20Mb+

6- about uGet, I think need to add flashgot addons to firefox to download through uGet directly.
You can download using only uGet.

7- spell checker is nto working in Abiword !
Will check it out. Recompiling abiword due to bug with plugins anyway.

8- there are 2 mediaplayer "Smplayer and Gnome-mplayer", may can delete Smplayer and use Gnome-mplayer faster.
More choices.

9- I had problem with Gnome-mplayer when I play "*.mkv" movie with daul audio, but here is the solution to save these configurations: * edit => preferences => player => Audio channels to output => stereo.
Thanks, i will add the config

10- also with Gnome-mplayer will be nice to pick checkbox on: * edit => preferences => interface => only allow one instance of Gnome-mplayer => pick checkbox on two choice of instance.
Will add it

11- SpaceFM file manager, right click to view files as icons style maybe better, also right click in partitions side and remove checkbox mark from "new tab" because I saw it noisy when open everything in new tab.
Will add this too.

Thanks for your feedback!

Hello Ahau,

Thanks, your suggestions did the trick.

Code: Select all

su
#enter root password
rmmod floppy
This did remove the icon. Then I went into the BIOS and removed the floppy and now no more phantom icon.

Thanks for the help...

The default, like with 2.0rc2 of XFCe version, is set to surround, aka 5.1 or 6.1 sound. When you watch a surround movie with just stereo sound attached, you only will hear the surround sound,no voices.

When you set it to be stereo only instead, all users with surround will complain that surround is not working out of the box...

In my book... either Porteus is able to check if surround is attached and change the settings at boot time (preferable, but also prone to bugs, and it makes startup a tad bit slower), or keep it at the default settings as: surround.
Then we can add a line to the main read me file that addresses the issue. :)

@fanthom,

RE: forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?p= 12919#12919 (mine)
12935#12935 (yours)

Thanks for you kind reply to my post on Porteus 2.0rc LXDE.

I could have explained myself much better, and in the future I shall attempt to do so. In reference to the "a)" problem concerning "Permission denied" error message for using root/PCMan, I was listing the actions I took until the problem showed up.

I have no problem with the boot menu since I changed my session to LXDE. Will change the menu as you suggested.

My sincere thanks,

Sean

Hi there,

Back to the 3G modem issue; I have just attached a 3G modem but Network Manager doesn't appear to acknowledge it. It's a ZTE (maker) device. Output from dmesg.

Code: Select all

[  171.594074] usb 2-1: new high-speed USB device number 5 using ehci_hcd
[  171.714736] scsi5 : usb-storage 2-1:1.0

Bus 002 Device 005: ID 19d2:2000 ZTE WCDMA Technologies MSM MF627/MF628/MF628+/MF636+ HSDPA/HSUPA
So it seems it is seen on the USB port as a modem, but the kernel is viewing it in its alternate mode as a CD-ROM.

Think you said some time ago, that by the addition of iso-codes (was it?) you managed to get a sequence of setup dialogues for using the 3G modem function, but I don't seem to be seeing that here. Hope this is useful. You didn't have a modem attached during your testing?

Additional to my last post, presently logged in via Linpus Lite. Here is some terminal output observed on connecting 3G modem now in use for internet connection. Some of it looks a bit odd, not sure why it is taking every ttyusb in sight. However it works. Think this is on a Fedora base. Hope this helps.

@oranus
thanks - this issue should be solved for final.

@Ahau
if audacious is causing troubles then deadbeef should be a better alternative. it's gtk2 based and requires no extra deps as far as i can tell (short testing).

@att
zram is still experimental thus not enabled by default. use with caution.
Despite I use the "copy2ram" parameter, my USB-stick keeps being automounted.
please show me /var/lob/porteus-livedbg and i'll tell you why (must be changes or additional modules not copied to ram)

.gvfs issue is sorted now.

@sean
I could have explained myself much better, and in the future I shall attempt to do so. In reference to the "a)" problem concerning "Permission denied" error message for using root/PCMan, I was listing the actions I took until the problem showed up.
i know but taking this opportunity i wanted to give some additional advices.
i'm also getting 'Operation not supported' message on trash in 64bits but only if i open pcmanfm as 'super user' while in guest session.
i think gvfs is not able to server both users and we cant resolve it other that logging out from LXDE and logging back as root.
in your case i would say that root cause is that gvfs was not included in LXDE bundle delivered by brokenman.

@gnomic
this is what i get when i connect my nokia phone to my laptop and choose 'PC-suite' mode instead of 'mass storage':

in your case please install 'usb_modeswitch' which you in other thread (will be added to final) and let me know if that helped.

btw: Linpus Lite displays more info in dmesg (like vendor ID) as it's kernel is compiled with 'CONFIG_USB_ANNOUNCE_NEW_DEVICES=y'
i doubt we need this functionality as 'lsusb' does the same.

@everyone
good news: 2.0 final will be released on Monday or Tuesday so we are really close :)

I apologize for my delay in replying, but I have had access to the dell inspiron 8200 with the aforementioned faulty behavior for the first time only a few moments ago...
To recap our conversation:

I said:
Some peculiar behavior you might want to look into. I have recently tried Porteus on two Dell Inspiron 8200 laptops, one has an Nvidia GEFORCE4GO 32MB video card and the other an ATI Radeon 9000 64MB one.
The first one (Nvidia card) works fine with any distribution I've tried on it (including Porteus 1.1) except for Porteus 2.0-rc1...During boot up and right at:

"triggering udev events: /sbin/udevadm trigger --action=add"

after a few seconds, there is the usual bang from the system speakers, the screen goes blank and the system
freezes at that point. Is this video-card related?
Porteus 2.0-rc1 works just fine on the second one, the ATI Radeon 9000 system.
You said:
hang at 'udev' part could be anything as udev is loading all kernel drivers at this stage (pobably one driver is borked, could be the nouveau one)
couple things to try:
a) please try to boot with 'nomodeset' cheatcode to disable KMS on nouveau driver
b) boot with 'acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor' cheatcode as they helped with resolving SYS_resq issue (intel+nvidia dual GPU setup)
c) if 2 advices above wont help then please boot as normal and save changes on some device/.dat container, access them from other OS and upload /var/log/messages and /var/log/Xorg.0.log to pastebin.com

please answer as soon as you can as tomorrow i'm compiling the kernel for 2.0 final so this is the last chance to tweak it's settings.
I have tried both of your suggestions:

a) booting with 'nomodeset' cheatcode perfectly fixes the issue. :) :Bravo:

b) booting with 'acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor' cheatcode does not make any difference at all to the issue in question.
One more thing you might want to know about and to look into: booting with 'copy2ram nohd' cheatcode on a frugal install (on hard drive partition) does not automatically umount the hd partition on which the porteus directories reside as it should, however I'm able to do it manually with 'umount' once booted.

I hope it helps.

EDIT: Please note that with the 'nomodeset' cheatcode I get an Xwindows resolution of only 1024x768, which is a much smaller screen than the usual 1400x1050 resolution that is usually automatically configured on this dell inspiron 8200 with Nvidia GEFORCE4GO graphic card.

Thanks for response about 3G. I see the output on inserting modem with Crunchbang is the same as with Linpus, except for this line. Don't know whether this is significant. Will see what I can do about usb_modeswitch - haven't actually got an install but could drop it into a live session. Unclear about 'pc-suite', that's a phone setting? Or somewhere in NM?

Code: Select all
