Some privacy suggestions

I have been using Porteus 1.2 (64bit , LXDE) for a month now and I am very happy with the low overhead and how quickly it loads, it also works great with my WPA Wi-fi, which I have found to be very difficult to configure with other Linux distros.

I would like to suggest a way to quickly adding OpenVPN to the live CD, for example having it available in modules like Truecrypt is. I read a thread on this forum about how to add OpenVPN manually but if you are using a live CD you cant spend too much time in configuration and lose everything when the computer is switched off, saving settings it is not an option for me, I do not wish to save personal details in clear text on any thumbdrive.

Another privacy suggestion would be to have Firefox Do Not Tack enabled by default, this can be found in Edit>Preferences>Privacy Tab of Firefox 13, (the version that comes with Porteus 1.2) and the box is not ticked. It would also be cool if Flashblock is not enabled, most sites I visit have Flash somewhere, I am wondering if is there really anyone here who surfs the Internet with all Flash animations blocked, if that is not the case it does not make sense to have it enabled everywhere. I am now disabling it manually but it requires restarting the browser.

Thank you for taking this into consideration.

Welcome on board!

Good idea.

Use an encrypted container.
Another privacy suggestion would be to have Firefox Do Not Tack enabled by default
Most of ad servers don't respect it, but it's still a good idea.
It would also be cool if Flashblock is not enabled
What about users with low bandwidth speed? Don't you think this would be a huge help for them.

Thanks :)

Flahsblock can be of help for those on very low speed Internet, but if we took a sample of one hundred Porteus users I would be surprised if more than %5 of them were at that level of low bandwidth mode. I am not suggesting Flashblock addon does not come with the distribution, I was only suggesting that it is not enabled by default and if the minority of users on low bandwidth need it, they can go to Firefox Options>addons and restart the browser.

It makes more sense to me to do what is the most beneficial to %95 of users and give an option to the %5, than the other way around.

has been added to rc1 of porteus-2.0 already

ok - i'll create a poll about it.

EDIT:\\

poll created and will run for next 14 days. please vote above.
i have selected 'enabled' as i hate adverts which eats my CPU/bandwidth making browsing the net slower.

Thank you for creating the poll, I just voted, Disabled of course, and I thought that most people might want that but right now it is losing. I am probably very lucky with my Internet connection and computer because flash animations do not slow down my browsing, but if that is what people wish then ok, not the end of the world.

I don't think this is related to bandwidth but rather to the way advertisers use flash to make their ads awful which are coming at the place of the information you're looking for. This is from my point of view a good way to allow the users to see what he want without affecting ads income from websites as they don't use a lot flash ads.

I could be wrong, i often am, .. but i thought enabe/disable flashblock is a simple matter of clicking the icon on the toolbar. Maybe a default of having that icon visible could be useful.

Good idea. Just found it was just easy to add it into the user bar.
  1. Right-Click on top bar
  2. Click on Customize
  3. Drag 'n Drop the Flash (F icon) to the preferred place on your browser -- I have personally placed it at right of DuckDuckGo search bar.

I don't know, I don't use it.

I think enable it will be better, because it's help to stop ads from opening and save RAM memory.

Thanks :)

1/ NoScript : disabled
People don't know how to use it most of the time.
(Mine is enabled with ABE checking)

2/ Stylish is usefull. For example :
http://userstyles.org/styles/58668/youtube-dark-n-red

3/ May be quickjava could be usefull either.

4/ Please use Firefox ESR instead of something else.
It is more stable. I view this page with Fx 10 ESR... 8)

5/ would chromium be available ?
(I don't want Google chrome. )

I prefer that Flashblock is enabled. If it's enabled when using Porteus for the first time, I know that the add-on is installed, and I can turn it off if I choose. Come on fellows, is it so difficult to disable it manually?

I now get the idea that having FlashBlock disabled is not very popular in between forum members, I was wrong about this since right now the only vote in favour to disable the addon is mine. If you would like to close the poll it will be ok with me. Thank you for the input and the possibility you have given members to take part in this vote.
