@Seq_Res
seems that you have dual graphics setup which is causing troubles:

Code: Select all

00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:0046] (rev 02)
	Subsystem: COMPAL Electronics Inc Device [14c0:0052]
	Kernel driver in use: i915
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: nVidia Corporation GT218 [GeForce 310M] [10de:0a70] (rev a2)
	Subsystem: COMPAL Electronics Inc Device [14c0:0052]
	Kernel driver in use: nouveau
we have few things to try:
a) please use latest nVidia driver from rc1 repo
b) it that wont help then please remove nVidia xzm and add this code to /etc/rc.d/rc.local:

Code: Select all

mount -t debugfs none /sys/kernel/debug
echo OFF > /sys/kernel/debug/vgaswitcheroo/switch
this code should turn off your nVidia card (thanks to brokenman for tip)
you could save it as /porteus/rootcopy/etc/rc.d/rc.local on your booting media
c) if that still wont work then please remove modified rc.local and boot with 'changes=' cheatcode.
when you get a hang then please reboot PC and send me /var/log/Xorg.0.log and /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old (placed in a folder where you save changes) to fanthom@porteus.org,

Thanks

@cttan
are you able to recreate the crash?
does it happen only when you boot with 'zram=' cheatcode?

i have read that zram may cause troubles when used together with suspend/hibernation, i may have a solution for this but please confirm above questions first.

Hi,
1. Will media content on 2.0 work out of the box, just like it has on Porteus 1.2?
2. Will support for Porteus 1.2 be continued once a 2.0 final version is ready?
3. Will Firefox 18 be available through "Porteus Settings Center" update for 1.2?
As you can see, I am a huge fan of Porteus 1.2. From what I have seen / tested, 2.0 resembles a lot to Slax 7.0. Slax 7.0 is nice, however, multi-media stream content (except Flash) does not play out of the box (also the case with 2.0 RC1), which I think is a real shame. I hope Porteus 2.0 will not follow in the same path in its final version.
The only problem I have with 1.2 is when I boot from SD-Card with an additional USB-Stick or external HDD plugged in. This hinders Porteus 1.2 from starting properly (it either does not boot at all, freezes or crashes). I can only plug in a USB-Stick or HDD without crashing the whole system after booting Porteus 1.2. first. I also make it a habit to safely remove all connected USB-Sticks or HDD before shutting down the system out of fear that it may also freeze or crash.
I am condensing all of my questions and comments in one post because I do not hang around here too often. I hope you do not mind.

Dankeschön

Johannes

Yes it should.

2. Will support for Porteus 1.2 be continued once a 2.0 final version is ready?
No, although we will help as best we can.

3. Will Firefox 18 be available through "Porteus Settings Center" update for 1.2?
We can make it available or you can download Porteus v2.0 and extract the base module.

To help with your issue on crashing you will need to provide more info such as a psinfo run after a crash. You may have to ssh into the box while it is munted.

@cttan, @fanthom, about crashing by sleeping/hibernating:

I have also that kind of crash: I leave the machine unattended for half an hour or so and when I come back the screen is black and the machine is total frozen; my suspect is the new kernel. The same OS (kde4-32bits) with the old kernel didn't do that.....

When the machine is attended and the screen goes black, I move the mouse and the screen comes to life again, no crash at all, a mystery :evil:

Thank you brokenman, thank you wread for the quick reply. I just added 32-Bit to my profile, and wread, I definitely wasn't complaining, just trying to help make Porteus even better or more stable than it already is! :D

I have no such problem in Razor or mate when i

a) Leave the system unattended and xscreensaver kicks in
b) When i select hibernate

The screenshot does indeed look like a kernel oops. Are these laptops? Perhaps laptopmode tools is the culprit?

Just a thought about screensavers: in the past I have encountered freezes where it seemed a particular screensaver just did not agree with the video driver. Workround was not to use that particular screensaver. In that instance however the system froze several times while leaving the offending saver displayed. Iirc that was an intel video card. Or perhaps try not using a screensaver as a test at any rate?

Returning to my previously reported problems with USB devices misbehaving, lately I put Tosh Satellite Pro s300 to sleep with USB mouse attached. When the machine resumed the mouse was not working. Tried dmesg in a terminal and saw some more about error -110. Switched the mouse to another port and it lit up and worked briefly, then failed again. Repeated same with last of the 3 ports, same behaviour. Thereafter, the mouse didn't work again on any port. Don't know if this is of any interest, but just in case maybe any kernel options around USB could need checking for example? Live 64-bit RC1.

I need cheatcodes utc= and tz=; hardware clock on most of dual boot Windows/Linux machines are not set to UTC, hence the utility hwclock can use utc=true while setting/saving hardware and, or system clock. Similarly, the tz="Zone/Place" would not only be good option, but is mandatory under some environments.

About crashes, again..

I will switch kernel of my Porteus 2.0-kde4-32-bits back to 3.4 9 and see if the sleep/hibernate function also crashes; if it doesn't, then is the new kernel to blame...

As with razor it does not crash, maybe the new kernel must find a screensaver; if it doesn't find anything, it crashes!

I will report back in an hour.

EDIT (4 hours later) No crash with kernel 3.4.9......This is meat for "kernelers" :x

Thanks Wread. I was going to suggest installing a screensaver to see if this is to blame, then i saw the kernel Oops in the screenshot.
