My Porteus-5.0-KDE Debugged

New features which should be implemented in Porteus; suggestions are welcome. All questions or problems with testing releases (alpha, beta, or rc) should go in their relevant thread here, rather than the Bug Reports section.

My Porteus-5.0-KDE Debugged

Hello everybody!
I run the KDE desktop version of Porteus 5.0, an excellent work of our Porteus Team!
I found some inconsistentses = minor bugs, that I could correct conveniently by deleting some files in 001-core, 002-xorg and 003-kde5. Then I added some needed extra files at 001-xcore, 002-xtra and 005-xkde5. After a couple of weeks test and daily use no more bugs have been found by me. I must say I use it as root in always fresh mode. My settings are hold in Porteus-modules stored in >modules>Settings.

The alternate modules are these:
https://www.mediafire.com/file/jcu89mtf ... e.xzm/file
https://www.mediafire.com/file/ga2lm3bh ... e.xzm/file
https://www.mediafire.com/file/zb3qxl2b ... g.xzm/file
https://www.mediafire.com/file/ur4rqviw ... a.xzm/file
https://www.mediafire.com/file/r5ky3ps7 ... 5.xzm/file
https://www.mediafire.com/file/wvo4174d ... 5.xzm/file

This is the best Porteus I ever had!

Use it with the original 000-kernel!

Enjoy!
Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).

I mostly use XFCE 4.12, but I am always interested in a system that runs another DE - when I need a software that needs that DE, it is more efficient to boot into another DE for a session than load all the extra modules into the one I already have running, and remove all modules afterwards again, but your mileage might vary.

Therefore my question: are any of the files you removed from 001-core or 002-xorg needed for any other DE but KDE5?

I am not using the original 000-kernel since no one so far was able to create a 340.108 NVidia module for a kernel newer than 5.4.30-porteus that I made many moons ago, so I presume your setup would not work for me using my 5.4.30-porteus kernel and using my 010-nvidia-340.108-k.5.4.30-porteus-v5.0-x86_64_rava.xzm driver module anyway?
Cheers!

@ wread
It's good that you found some small bugs.
But why don't you write them in the bug report?
Instead you change the base modules and add your own modules.
I mean, the base modules should remain unchanged.
Your own changes can be added to the system in different ways.
What if there is an update that fixes your bugs?
Who should just install your 6 modules without knowing what will be better?

Exactly this question shows the problem.
Basic modules are changed and the next one doesn't know whether it still works or has the next error in the system.
My advice: leave the basic module unchanged, so that everyone in the forum knows what you are talking about.

@Itrukrakso, @Rava
Hi,
I wrote I DELETED files from 001-core, 002-xorg and 003-kde5 and ADDED extra files to 001-xcore, 002-xtra and 003-xkde5, all for the KDE desktop.
I did not write I CHANGED any files. If I didn't DELETE the files the bugs had remained. Sorry I DELETED files from the originals (and had to tell you!), you´d better be happy!

If you have a spare usb stick copy my files to it and test if it works for you, adding your modules and options. If you prefer other desktop try substituting my 003's for those of your preferred desktop. Maybe it works fine and without bugs. You sure can do it!

By the way, I added Speedtest by Ookla and my own Wallpaper, a beauty!

Good luck!

You do not have to be sorry for deleting files to fix the issues.

I don't need a spare USB key, I boot via USB 2 GB SD-card (in USB-reader, since usually no PC boots from a native internal SD card reader) - but the default setting is load kernel and initrd from USB and load the rest via internal harddrive - and there I will set up my test with your modules - one your KDE suite, one with my Xfce 4.12 module replacing the KDE5 one.

Do you happen to have a diff for your changes?
What you deleted, what you edited? Cause I think that could be the base for Porteus 5.0.1 :)

Sure, diff can do a diff on folders, files and subfolders as well, so everyone can figure out which files you changed when comparing an exploded native base module to your changed base module,
Cheers!
Yours Rava

Hi wread,

The modules 000-003 should be valid and work for all DE.
Do we agree on that ?
If you change a 001-core module for KDE, it should be marked accordingly,
because the universality of the module is no longer given.
Unfortunately, you have made your changes to obsolete modules.
Your modules 001 and 002 are from 06/30 and therefore faulty.
They were updated on 07/23.

@itrukrakso
I don't agree on 003...you can have only one desktop activated, 003 is special!

I deleted a file from 001 and 002 and marked it accordingly...added one file for the two erased...

My modules were taken from OFFICIAL iso dated Tuesday, July 5, 2022 9:16:00 AM AST....

Why don't you try them and tell me what is wrong with it?

Saludos cordiales!

I agree, 003 is only valid for the one DE you use at that time.

Changing what itrukrakso wrote, this should be correct:
The modules 000-002 should be valid and work for all DEs.

Added in 42 minutes 38 seconds:
What is 001-xcore.xzm and what is 003-xkde5.xzm ?

Added in 17 minutes 51 seconds:
Are these md5sums accurate?

Code: Select all

but after that there was an update for 001 and 002:

or:

I'm not saying that your old 001 module for KDE won't work, it certainly will, but in an Xfce environment there are problems with the printer.
Among other things, the update fixes this bug.
But if you offer outdated modules for download you're not doing anyone any favours.

@rava
your md5sum are accurate.
you can open 001-x.. and 003-x.. and see what they have!
001-x.. has Ookla speedtest, little and handy, open a konsole and type "speedtest"
003-x.. has now Home and Trash on desktop again and sounds and my wallpaper; I like to hear login sound when I start the machine!

The update you published is dated July 23, 2022. At that time my corrections were already done.
Check it on 003-xkde5.xzm date is July 21, 2022. I was faster!

Sorry! You did a fine work too!

Might be, but you still should create an updated version based on the porteus/x86_64/current/updates/core/20220723/ updates, like itrukrakso wrote

I was planing on testing your changed base modules without your 003-kde5 one but with my 003-xfce-4.12 one - but will not do so for now - because of what itrukrakso wrote as quoted above, that the official updates fixed errors with XFCE, while your modules do not incorporate these fixes.
