VLC 2.x for Porteus 2.1

Post#1 by solnyshok » 10 Aug 2013, 16:23

I used VLC on 2.1rc2 x64. But with release of 2.1 I am trying to switch to x32 arch.
VLC 2.x-i486 in needs 100+ MB dependencies and still not able to resolve some of those. What shall a porteus newb do?

UPDATE:
If installed Qt from PPM. If I install VLC from PPM without dependency resolution, vlc is able to start but cannot play videos, says "codecs are missing"

To have a better understanding of package manipulation, maybe you could try to work with slackyd:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/mnt/sda5/64bit_v2_XFCE/changes/root/Downloads# slackyd -u

Repository: slackware [ftp.heanet.ie]
`- Downloading FILELIST.TXT [ok]
`- Downloading CHECKSUMS.md5 [ok]
`- Downloading PACKAGES.TXT [ok]
`- Downloading MANIFEST.bz2 [ok]
...
Then:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/mnt/sda5/64bit_v2_XFCE/changes/root/Downloads# slackyd -g vlc
And download the additional packages.

They will all be in the /var/slackyd/ folder. Then convert them into .xzm packages.

However, looking at it there seems to be a lot of dependencies. You will have to be courageous, just that brokenman, who is Mr PPM looks at this thread.

Or make a demand for a module (you will have to be patient):

@solnyshock:
With SMPlayer the VLC is now obsolete. SMPlayer is included in Porteus; if it must be VLC, you can use version 1.1.13 that runs ok in Porteus 2.1. :)
Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).

"vlc is able to start but cannot play videos, says "codecs are missing""

I am taking a blind shot here as I am a slax remix 9 / slax 7 user rather than Porteus.
I had made slax 7 module for vlc from 2.05 to 2.08 using alienbob txz.
(http://www.slackware.com/~alien/slackbu ... /pkg/14.0/)
All will run but you will get "missing codec" when trying to play.

You need sdl. For slax 7 ,the missing codec is resolved with sdl. Slax 7 is not Porteus but it is still close enough to Porteus (KDE version).
Give sdl a try.

My slax 7 vlc modules:

"Nice to see you drop by jcosh."
I drop by quite often (sometimes to look for modules to pinch) but since I don't really use Porteus beyond testing , I don;t post or log in.
