TestDisk & PhotoRec 7.2 WIP

Cave! WIP stands for Work In Progress, it is not yet the finale version of TestDisk & PhotoRec 7.2, but its Maintainer Christophe Grenier from cgsecurity.org told me it is more capable of recovering certain files.

E.g. on mp3 he wrote:
https://github.com/cgsecurity/testdisk/ ... 165184194d is one of the commit that improve mp3 recovery in PhotoRec 7.2-WIP.
More info in the 7.2 release notes and the git history.

Cave²! The module is much larger than the 7.1 due to the binaries being static binaries. If 7.1 works well for you, you can use that instead.

Cave³! I left out the Chinese man pages, only the English ones are provided.

TestDisk is free data recovery software designed to help recover lost
partitions and/or make non-booting disks bootable again when these symptoms
are caused by faulty software, certain types of viruses or human error.
It can also be used to repair some filesystem errors.

Information gathered during TestDisk use can be recorded for later
review. If you choose to create the text file, testdisk.log , it
will contain TestDisk options, technical information and various
outputs; including any folder/file names TestDisk was used to find and
list onscreen.

Use arrow keys to select, then press Enter key:
>[ Create ] Create a new log file
[ Append ] Append information to log file
 [ No Log ] Don't record anything
Here is the module at filehorst (the md5sum is like filehorst says it is):
testdisk-7.2-WIP-x86_64-rava.xzm

To get it, first wait 15 seconds "Dein Download wird jetzt vorbereitet." (Your download is being prepared)
Then click "Jetzt zur Download-Seite" (now to the download page)
Then click
"Dein Download steht nun bereit.
Klicke hier, um ihn zu starten.
" (Your download is ready.
Click here to start downloading it)

Be aware that the programs can help with fixing partition issues and data recovery, but applying one or all programs erroneously can also create data loss. =@

TestDisk & PhotoRec 7.2 WIP

Just realized, the last download was 9.9.2023 (Overall downloads: 67 (381,85 MB))

Seems that quite old module still is in demand. Than makes me a happy camper. <B

Added in 10 hours 27 minutes 36 seconds:
@all

There is a newer version I just downloaded - also called 7.2 WIP, but with this tag when you start it

Code: Select all

TestDisk 7.2-WIP, Data Recovery Utility, August 2023
instead of my older version being:

Code: Select all

TestDisk 7.2-WIP, Data Recovery Utility, Novembre 2020
I will make a new module soon. Since the version name stays the same I will just add "UPDATED" to the subject and put the info about it in the first post itself (while keeping the info about the older version available)

Added in 2 minutes 38 seconds:
One issue with the newer version that I did not recall with the older one: I started it and aborted it via Ctrl+C and then the cursor was gone. I could type stuff and execute stuff but editing the command line was off since I did not see where the cursor was. Executing

Code: Select all

reset
solved the issue.

Added in 14 minutes 14 seconds:
The new version has a file in l/linux

Code: Select all

linux: Compiled terminfo entry "linux"
Probably that is needed - added to the module to not get the vanishing cursor.

@ncmprhnsbl @beny @donald @Mike_Walsh @all
Do you know more about compiled terminfo entries? Because I only recall having heard of these but forgot all the details; ergo I have no clue how to incorporate that into a module and if I should do so in the first place since it could cause issues with the rest of the system? :wall:
Cheers!
