My files have no extension (which agrees with the quoted part) and one can say that Interlink, as an Mozilla Thunderbird fork uses an "email format used by Mozilla".

These files are the plain text files of the mailbox folders (that was usually 7 bit ASCII but it seems nowadays these are UTF-8 encoded) containing the plain text emails all together one after the other - and the attachments from each email (that has an attachment) encoded as base64.
