Another way to add translation to Nemo is to download this module* in all languages...
It is 1.92 MB (8.5 MB uncompressed !) but you can reduce it to very small if you keep only your own language !

e91aa2f732ec0e91d25cb3d9dad29000 nemo-translations.xzm (1,9 MB) :

https://www.mediafire.com/file/qvj2e7q6 ... s.xzm/file

* Which I filtered from the file cinnamon-translations-5.2.2-noarch-1_csb.txz

Information !

In Xfce, it is better to place the Nemo module inside 'module' folder...

Because, if placed in 'optional' , if Thunar filemanager is opened and Nemo is activated with the 'Porteus modules' window at the same time, then :
- Thunar is closed automatically
- The desktop applications menu (Panel) is removed

But no problem if the module is actived with Thunar not yet opened or if the module is activated in command line with Terminal

Rapha_, Thank you!
On activation it replaces the SpaceFM in OpenBox, Nemo seem to take over as a File Manager. What if I just wanted to have it as an alternative, modest, "low profile", standalone File Manager? Just as a new entry in my "Accessories" start menu?

Nemo filemanager 5.2.3 for all desktops

Hi rych,

it does not replace it, the 2 file managers can work in same time

- The default file manager is always called with its icon or the menu
- And Nemo is called by the 'Accessories Menu' / 'Files'.

But it's true that Nemo is displayed by default when a file is (for example) downloaded : I don't know how to change that...

hi if we have the file manager like thunar or dolphin that are embedded into the system no problem to add other file manager the mime index allow only thunar or dolphin to open the mime index,when you use a standalone file manager you have to tweak the mime index with xdg-utils,but i am not shure how rych try this deactivate nemo or remove the /usr/bin and open a terminal xdg-open a directory or folder maybe you have a dialog window that ask you which app you want to use to open the directory
i have read this on a xubuntu forum,i have thunar as default but also nemo and caja and work only thunar for the file manager

Isn't Thunar always running since it handles part of the XFCE desktop?
Or did that change and now there is one of the myriads of xfce-WHATEVER apps that does that job?

Just to be on the safe side: when I open a terminal and start Nemo from that terminal, all is fine?
And when I want to start Nemo via the main menu, I have to first close all open Thunar file browser programs?
Cheers!

Nemo filemanager 5.2.3 for all desktops

Using this system

Code: Select all

001-core.xzm:20221211
002-xorg.xzm:20221211
002-xtra.xzm:20221211
003-xfce.xzm:20220925
initrd.xz:20220928

Kernel:
5.4.30-porteus
I got this error when activating the module:

Code: Select all

# activate nemo_5.2.3_filemanager_bundle.xzm
Updating shared library links:  /sbin/ldconfig

(gtkdialog.py:23425): Gtk-WARNING **: 03:11:20.003: Could not load a pixbuf from icon theme.
This may indicate that pixbuf loaders or the mime database could not be found.
**
Gtk:ERROR:../gtk/gtkiconhelper.c:494:ensure_surface_for_gicon: assertion failed (error == NULL): Failed to load /usr/share/icons/elementary-xfce/status/48/image-missing.png: Unrecognized image file format (gdk-pixbuf-error-quark, 3)
Bail out! Gtk:ERROR:../gtk/gtkiconhelper.c:494:ensure_surface_for_gicon: assertion failed (error == NULL): Failed to load /usr/share/icons/elementary-xfce/status/48/image-missing.png: Unrecognized image file format (gdk-pixbuf-error-quark, 3)
Updating MIME database:  /usr/bin/update-mime-database /usr/share/mime
Updating glib schemas: /usr/bin/glib-compile-schemas /usr/share/glib-2.0/schemas
Is that a bug in the nemo module or in the xfce module? =@

Added in 3 minutes 40 seconds:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/# file /usr/share/icons/elementary-xfce/status/48/image-missing.png
/usr/share/icons/elementary-xfce/status/48/image-missing.png: PNG image data, 48 x 48, 8-bit/color RGBA, non-interlaced
file reports the image file as okay, and my image viewer can view it just fine. :)

Added in 8 minutes 27 seconds:
Is it possible to switch off its behaviour to look in every folder to tell me how many objects (files & folders) are in each of the folders that is currently displayed?

When you have a folder with many sub-folders and these have many files in them, it takes a while and is a strain on the system (since nemo looks into every singe folder), and also, in my book, unneeded,

Added in 9 minutes 41 seconds:
For now, a web search gave me this general tutorial on tweaking nemo https://itsfoss.com/nemo-tweaks/ and it not mentions my issue.

Probably it can be done, but maybe only via a setup file and not via its settings menu/window ?

Added in 49 minutes 38 seconds:
I found a severe but (at least I think it is)

According to the above linked tut, when you select more than one file and click in the context menu on "rename" you get a window similar to the rename thingy of thunar:

Image
(screenshot as found on https://itsfoss.com/nemo-tweaks/ )

but alas! Instead, nothing happens!
Since I started nemo from the main XfcE menu and not via a terminal, I do not see any possible error messages.

I very much hope that this can easily and quick be fixed! Pretty please... :Rose:

Added in 4 minutes 58 seconds:
Update
I now exited and started nemo from the guest terminal.
At startup I see these errors

Code: Select all

** (nemo:25265): WARNING **: 04:28:21.095: Current gtk theme is not known to have nemo support (Adwaita-dark) - checking...

** (nemo:25265): WARNING **: 04:28:21.348: The theme appears to have no nemo support. Adding some...
but when selecting "rename" on several files, nothing happens in the terminal.
Is that an option that now must first be activated in its settings?

(the above tut said nothing about that, or maybe i missed it)

Added in 7 minutes 34 seconds:
I looked into its settings, and there in tab behaviour at the very bottom is this:
Image
Funny, now I can put

Code: Select all

thunar -B
in there, but the nemo settings says nothing how the parameters should be handled in that input area.. (Thunar tells us this in its settings, like what is used to represent the files, what represents the current folder etcetera)
But it seems, just putting

Code: Select all

thunar -B
is sufficient, nemo gave the filenames to the thunar bulk renamer. :Yahoo!:

Added in 23 minutes 29 seconds:
Can nemo be told to sort hidden files as first files in a folder and not at the very end?
All other file managers sort these files at the top, but nemo does not. :wall:

_____________________________________________

And one final question/issue (I hope)

Where does nemo store its settings?
Since I use no changes but use my 999-rootcopy.xzm module half-auto-generated.
Cheers!

for the rename bulk you have to make a script and put in this location:/home/guest/.local/share/nemo/actions
the script look like this named gprename and work.

Code: Select all

   cat ~/.local/share/nemo/actions/bulk-rename.nemo_action
[Nemo Action]
Name=Bulk Rename
Comment=Multiple Rename with GPRename. The action gets executed for the marked or the higher level directory.
Exec=gprename %F
Selection=m
Extensions=any;
EscapeSpaces=true
Dependencies=gprename;
you can also add the script located into the /opt directory .local/share/nemo/script

Seems gprename is not part of the nemo module?

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/mnt/live/memory/images/nemo_5.2.3_filemanager_bundle.xzm# find . |grep gprename
root@porteus:/mnt/live/memory/images/nemo_5.2.3_filemanager_bundle.xzm# echo $?

Oh well, the Thunar rename works just fine for me, and as long as I run XFCE there will also be Thunar.

Do you have an idea where nemo stores its settings?
Is it in ~/.config/dconf/user ?

I created this
cat ~/.local/share/nemo/actions/bulk-rename.nemo_action

Code: Select all

Name=Bulk Rename
Comment=Multiple Rename with XFCE's Thunar bulk rename. The action gets executed for the marked or the higher level directory.
Exec=thunar -B %F
Selection=m
Extensions=any;
EscapeSpaces=true
Dependencies=xfce;
and opened a new nemo, but I do not see a "Bulk Rename" entry in its context menu. Do I first have to close all running nemo instances and open a new nemo window?
──────────────────────────────────────
How do I change the location selector to pathbar style?
In thunar I have this:

@beny
I killed all nemo instances and started nemo via a terminal to be able to see its output , then the "Rename..." entry appears.
But… using the same code as above

Code: Select all

guest@rava:~$ cat ~/.local/share/nemo/actions/bulk-rename.nemo_action
[Nemo Action]
Name=Bulk Rename
Comment=Multiple Rename with XFCE's Thunar bulk rename. The action gets executed for the marked or the higher level directory.
Exec=thunar -B %F
Selection=m
Extensions=any;
EscapeSpaces=true
Dependencies=xfce;
nothing happens, the rename window of thunar that should have popped up did not appear.
and the terminal that started nemo doesn't display any error.

again: what am I doing wrong?

Is nemo even using my ~/.local/share/nemo/actions/bulk-rename.nemo_action - because its context menu entry I clicked is called "Rename..." while following the beny code as seen above as template for my code, I use Name=Bulk Rename - should nemo have called the menu entry "Bulk Rename..." ?
So many questions, so little knowledge about the inner workings by nemo from my side of things. :wall:

for nemo's bulk rename I did the following:

Make sure thunar is installed, when you DE is XFCE, then it is.

in Nemo on the menu edit > preferences > behaviour > bulk rename, enter

Code: Select all

thunar --bulk-rename
and you can then select multiple files and right click->rename.

The only file that got changed was /home/guest/.config/dconf/user so I included it in my 992-rootcopy_5.0_2023-09-29.xzm
For this X session, clicking rename when multiple files are selected opens the thunar bulk rename window.
Only a reboot will tell me if nemo recalls that setting. Wish me luck. :)
Cheers!

via Nemo - use keyboard to switch to different parts of the window?
https://superuser.com/questions/1478223 ... ow#1485785

among others these two are gold for me:
F3 Toggle Extra Pane (split view that shows two folder side by side)
F9 Toggle left pane (browsing folders only)

And you can even press F3 and F9 at the same time. B)

Added in 8 minutes 31 seconds:
though, for practicality in most times first pressing F3 for the extra pane and then use the left side-pane for browsing to the desired folder in the 2nd folder view, only then press F9 to switch off the left pane.
When done with whatever copying or moving or comparing you set out to do and you want to go back to usual operations mode, then you can press F3+F9 at the same time. :D
