Change from Porteus 4.0 to Porteus 5.0
Even so. I presume Porteus 4.0 uses an older GLIBC - that is the main C GNU library. Usually a new system can run older software because a newer GLIBC often is able to handle requests asking for an older GLIBC … in my case, I run 5.0rc3 and still use a very outdated FBReader (because it is just for reading eBooks, and I prefer it small, and I do not plan on wasting several days trying to slim down a newer version) - case in point, what I need is this:
Code: Select all
035-fbreader-0.12.10-x86_64-2ponce.xzm 1.79 MB
035-fbreader-0.99.2_deps_qt-4.8.4STRIPPED+liblinebreak-2.1--x86_64.rava.xzm 4.13 MB
But an older system cannot run programs that need the newer GLIBC, and you cannot replace a GLIBC, because almost all programs (especially the basic CLI ones) need the correct GLIBC, trying to upgrade the GLIBC without also updating all programs is a sure way to break your system.
For now the best approach is using an outdated tor-browser that is known to run with Port 4.0. I know, not ideal. but what can one do when many user have similar issues, unless the issue is resolved for everyone.
Cheers!

Change from Porteus 4.0 to Porteus 5.0
Hi all,
In Porteus 5.0 Xfce, browsers start slowly.
Much slower than in Porteus 4.0 Xfce.
Why is that?

Do you use the very same browser version in both 4.0 and 5.0?
What XFCE do you use in 4.0 and 5.0?
I use in both XFCE 4.12.

Hi Rava,
I use the very same browser version.
I use the official versions Xfce in Porteus:
in 4.0 this is version 4.12
and in 5.0 that is version 4.16
4.16 is newer, so it should be better and faster ?
Why are you using version 4.12 ?

Because with XFCE sadly that is not the case.
Against what the philosophy of XFCE should be (a very slim but functional DE) with 4.14 and 4.16 they bloated the system leading to a more sluggish performance compared to 4.12 - without adding anything that makes 4.14 or 4.16 superior compared to 4.12.
Let's see what fulalas has to say on this:
Xfce 4.12 for Porteus 5 final release

Please do create an XFCE setup that uses his 003-xfce-4.12-20220725 and compare the performance with the 4.16 one. And please report back.

Hi all,
Command cp -r
from USB (large folder with many subfolders) to RAM
Can it be that such a command takes longer in Porteus 5.0 than in Porteus 4.0 ?

Have you compared your standard XFCE 4.16 to the mentioned 4.12 in the meantime?
You need a different setup and a full reboot, you cannot have 2 DEs loaded at the same time. When your system is able to switch to multiuser text mode (mode 3) - via init - and when you log into the virtual terminal as root, it might be working that you are able to deactivate your xfce-4.16 module, and then activate your xfce-4.12 module. But after deactivating the xfce module, make sure it is really gone from /mnt/live/memory/images - only when it's gone activate the 4.12 XFCE module.
If you cannot deactivate your 4.16 module you need a different boot setup that uses the 4.12 and not the 4.16 XFCE and make a full reboot.
If you manage to deactivate 4.16 and activate 4.12 then you would either use init again to switch back into graphics mode, or to be on the more safe side of things, log into another virtual console as guest and start X manually by executing
Code: Select all
$ startx
The main reason I ask is, if your difference in performance is mainly due to the more sluggish 4.16 vs the more agile 4.12 … then using 4.12 might already be the solution to your more recent question as quoted above.
And no, I will not try 4.16 to make the comparison for you.
Like fulalas and Ed_P we all three do know why we use XFCE 4.12 instead of 4.16. We do not have to verify the fact that XFCE 4.12 is the better one (compared to 4.14 and 4.16) every time anew.
Cheers!

Change from Porteus 4.0 to Porteus 5.0
Hi Rava,
No noticeable difference between 4.12 and 4.16
So you can stay with 4.16
For example, in 4.16, if you click the pencil icon on mnt sdc1, /mnt/sdc1/ appears, very useful for copy etc.
When I use Xfce 4.12 in Porteus 5.0, this is not the case.
When changing 4.12 <==> 4.16, you also have to change the xfce4_locales language module.
