i've made an irc chat channel on freenode libera.chat #porteuslinux for anybody who is into that kind of thing.
note: due to recent happenings at freenode, i've switched to libera.chat
i try to log in daily, so if you have some query or looking for help, grab your favourite chat client and stop by..

USM's hexchat works. :)

Any commands to get it to connect to #porteuslinux automatically when starting?

Kiwi IRC's (https://webchat.freenode.net/) works well too. :happy62:

Enter your Porteus forum Nick name, #porteuslinux for Channel, check the reCAPTCHA box, click Start. :good:

Oh, missed this one...

Actually IRC is a properly defined protocol.
Any client understanding/talking such protocol would be of course preferred...
One could think a client the equivalent of a ´app´.

Advertising the existence of a IRC channel is a recommendable initiative.
Thanks @ncmprhnsbl for the initiative

Either I am too stupid to get the IRC going (I last used it 1 1/2 or 2 years ago)

So, I go to https://libera.chat/ and do as it says there
Connect by pointing your IRC client to irc.libera.chat:6697 (TLS)
which gets me this
Image
Since I cannot make any changes to what I see there, I highlight "Mibbit" and click [Open Link]
and then… no Mibbit window opens, instead I get an error in Palemoon:

Code: Select all

This Connection is Untrusted

You have asked Pale Moon to connect securely to chat.mibbit.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.

Normally, when you try to connect securely, sites will present trusted identification to prove that you are going to the right place. However, this site's identity can't be verified.
What Should I Do?

chat.mibbit.com uses an invalid security certificate.

The certificate is only valid for *.chat.mibbit.com

(Error code: SSL_ERROR_BAD_CERT_DOMAIN)
(The URL is https://chat.mibbit.com and PM complains cause its not *.chat.mibbit.com :wall: )

According to Mibbit its a JS web-based client for web browsers. So, does my Palemoon need it as Addon?
Is it even available for PM?

At least https://addons.palemoon.org/search/?terms=mibbit gives no hits. :(

Added in 13 minutes 28 seconds:
The issue with Mibbit and PM goes back at least to 2017 - that is 5 years ago!

See here https://forum.palemoon.org/viewtopic.ph ... it#p110196
To quote
https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze ... mibbit.com

You better dont try to open that site at any cost, like firefox or other browsers do because you decrease your security+privacy then.
Pale Moon protect you against such bad security settings.

But, I ran the same test like in the quote above, and the ranking went up from F to B.

Still, seems not good enough for PM.
To compare with the screenshot in the PM forum post above - here is mine:

SSL Report: client00.chat.mibbit.com (78.129.202.23)

And finally for comparison, this is the same test for https://forum.porteus.org

um.. did you try clicking on "choosing an irc client" ? https://libera.chat/guides/clients
We provide two web clients:
https://web.libera.chat/ and https://web.libera.chat/gamja/

Nope, I just followed what the page told me and posted the result.

https://libera.chat/guides/clients - gamja displays in PM only an empty page,

And with KiwiIRC, "robust" it might be, but I only see 2 boxes, and no title or text, only that the 1st box has Guest[number] as default.

Therefore I presume the 1st is the one where I choose my username and the 2nd is the one where I input #porteuslinux ?

Could be that the page is coded so weirdly that my "Advanced Night Mode" displays black text on black background…
Indeed, switching from "default" to "Simple CSS" makes the text visible.

I post a screenshot so that others not need to repeat my folly:
Image
White text on white background is as genius as black text on black background. </irony>

Usually when such stuff happens, the site defines a text colour, but forgets to also define the background colour. With the logic "no one would use a different background colour than we do" :wall:
But I am too lazy to look into it, usually the folks who have such faults colours say "all is good when only we change half of the colours, since when does a user do so as well"
And since such ignorance about CSS and standards gave me headaches in the past, I no longer care since usually such sites are ignorant about their own ignorance. :D
