Porteus 4.0 does not work

I have porteus on usb flash drive.
flash drive No.1: porteus 3.2 64bit Xfce
flash drive No.2: porteus 4.0 64bit Xfce
Both versions work on one computer.
On another computer only version 3.2 works.
Version 4.0 does not work.
Error message:
porteus login /usr/bin/xauth var/run/slim.auth does not exists
Why is that?
Who can help?
Many Thanks

Addendum:
I did not have the patience.
The booting to the GUI takes almost 5 minutes!

Init 2.88 booting
After that the screen stays dark for a long time.
Then message:
porteus login /usr/bin/xauth var/run/slim.auth does not exists
and the cursor flashes for a long time.
After that the screen again stays dark for a long time.
Then message:
X.Org X server 1.19.6
...
Current version of pixman: 0.34.0
...
(==) log file: "/var/log/Xorg.O.log"
(==) Using system config directory "/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d"
After that the screen again stays dark for a long time.
Then the GUI finally appears.
What can I do to speed up the process?

Kulle, boot up Porteus in Text mode and run these commands:

Code: Select all

su
toor
startx
Linux 6.6.11-porteus #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Sun Jan 14 12:07:37 MSK 2024 x86_64 Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E3-1270 v6 @ 3.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Thank you for the hint.
But time hasn't shortened.
After the command startx the screen stays dark for a very long time.
Why?
What else can I do to speed up the process?

Could it be that the PC with the dark screen issues and long startup time is a notebook / laptop with internal special slimmed down GPU?
Does your graphics card has its own RAM or does it use the main PC memory?

Also, you would give very helpful info when you run "Porteus system info", create a full report "dump full report", upload the report to pastebin and post the link here. :)
Cheers!

Hi Rava,
I have run "Porteus system info" and i have upload the report to pastebin.
File psinfo_report.txt (full report) = 132 kB
But the file pastebin-link.txt is empty (Length of the file: 1 byte !)

How should I submit the file psinfo_report.txt ?

But (This is completely incomprehensible to me):
Porteus 4.0 very long startup time (almost 5 minutes!)
Porteus 3.2 (on the same Computer) only short startup time

Fine, lets analyse it, then. Since I don't do much of such analysing I might ask a some more questions to be sure I get everything right, okay. Just do correct me if I am wrong and else either conform when I am right, or ignore it. But don't keep quiet when I state something that seems wrong to you, or else all I do might be for nil, okay?

Code: Select all

MEMORY/SWAP:
gesamt benutzt frei gemns. Puffer/Cache verfügbar
Speicher: 1994 267 477 821 1249 632
Swap: 2037 0 2037
Your PC has 2 GB of RAM, and you created a 2+ GB swap partition on its internal harddrive, ( /dev/sda5 ) correct?

I have to pause here due to urgent RL stuff, please confirm the above in the meantime. BRB [1] as soon as I can.

@ Kulle
KERNEL/PROCESSOR:
4.15.2-porteus x86_64

4.0 final has kernel 4.16.3 -- looks like you use an old (rc ?) version.
Download a new one and try again, the issue might have been fixed already.

Thank you for the help.
But Porteus 4.0 with the new kernel 4.16.3 starts just as slowly (almost 5 minutes!)
I think, the bug will be hard to find.
Lately, I've always had to deal with insidious errors!
Porteus 3.2 starts fast on the old computer.
And that is enough for me, because the old computer is just my second device.
There is no need to use version 4.0 on the old computer.

Kulle. I realized that you load some modules like ones with saved settings that are double and triple, also you seem to load the devel module each time.

Could you remove temporarily all modules with the several instances of settings, and also start in always fresh mode.

These are what I mean:

Code: Select all

/dev/loop7 squashfs 7,9M 7,9M 0 100% /mnt/live/memory/images/changes-180223.xzm
/dev/loop8 squashfs 55M 55M 0 100% /mnt/live/memory/images/changes-180331.xzm
/dev/loop9 squashfs 57M 57M 0 100% /mnt/live/memory/images/changes-180403.xzm
Could it be that some of these settings modules are settings done by 3.2 and not by 4.0?

Also, try the final version of the kernel, initrd and 000, 001 and 002 module like donald suggested.
Cheers!
Yours Rava
