Email from Tomas M -new slax version

Anyone remember Tomas M?
The older members recall that Porteus started as "Slax remix", and Tomas M is the maintainer of SLax.
Just today got an email from him:

Hello Rava

I am proud to announce that new Slax version has been released today, on 24th of December.

Merry Christmas :-)

You can download Slax from www.slax.org
You can also purchase Slax on USB or DVD+RW there too.
Enjoy the new release! :)

Best regards

Tomas M
On the website you find this: slax-64bit-9.6.5.iso ( 9dd9151c596615d20726e4a11164bab8 ) with 264 MB
slax-32bit-9.6.5.iso (md5sum 1a6723cd58df70d87755fdae138e037e ), for 32 bit at 270 MB or
slax-ipxe.iso the 9.6.5 ipxe ( b347608199f2a0a70fb7a31beb460c20 ) 0.88 MB

Unlike its name, Slax is no longer Slackware based, the main page says it like so:
Slax is now based on Debian, which gives you the ability to benefit from its entire ecosystem. Tens of thousands of prebuilt packages with applications, all within reach thanks to apt command.
Cheers!
Yours Rava

Actually, the name has also been changed. It is no longer Slax, rather S.L.A.X - Small Live Auxiliary linuX. From here:

Good that ponce kept these threads for posterity. Thanks for posting them here blaze.

I remember that one of the first interventions of fanthom was about how to change the splash screen on slax. A year or so after he was at the head of slax-remix. jayflood involved himself a little more at some point. The presence of slax-remix on the slax forum was a situation that was well tolerated by Tomas, and then the move was made for secession. Tomas did not like the poor man or frugal install.

I wonder if brokenman or fanthom have any commentaries out of the record on these peculiar days when the band was hosted on the slax forum.

Even the mediafire downloads mentioned in the article are still online: http://www.mediafire.com/?rrprviubflos6 B)

e.g. slax-remix-v08.iso - Downloads 1893 - size 181 MB - 2010-08-21. :)

At that time I was a hacker of satellite content and Slax interested me only in this direction. It was 2007-2008 years.
Before that, I have not dealt with GNU Linux. But I was even more attracted and now I'm here :D

Thanks to fanthom for the right direction :hi:

I am going to install Slax 9.6.5 when I get up and find a 8gb thumb drive and hope I can use ext4 format. It been a long time since I use it so I am going to try it again.
I just like Slackware because I think it teach you about Linux to build packages where Ubuntu is like Windows you just install programs you want.

Sadly, it doesn't say much on https://www.slax.org/introduction.php
Slax 64bit version
  • Memory: 128 MB of RAM for desktop
512 MB of RAM to run Web browser
  • Peripherals: CD or USB drive to boot from
No info how large a USB thumbdrive needs to be, or what filesystem it supports.

But it says you find more info on https://www.slax.org/starting.php
Install Slax on hard disk or USB flash drive
[...]
It is recommended that your disk uses msdos partition scheme (not GPT). Furthermore, it needs to be formatted, FAT32 or ext4 is recommended.
Seems you are in luck and it works with ext4.

My question, is ext4 able to work without journaling? Cause I use ext2 without journal for the very reason to minimize write operations on USB thumbdrives.
Cheers!

And it seems there is no Slax forum, all that is mentioned is a blog. I also found no FAQ… at least not listed on any page I looked into up to now.

I think the no WLAN was also a "FEATURE" and folks on here complained about that, and it was quite a while back when the then recently Slax was discussed here.
Cheers!

I agree. Journaling was designed for hard drives, large hard drives, and slows down flash drives.
