I'm not questioning your expertice Blaze. I'm expressing my preference for the location of the ads based on their visual impact on viewing the forum. A banner at the bottom is 1000% less annoying that an ad at the top. :happy62:

I am aware that ads can be annoying. Ads are never fun but consider this:

Porteus hosting = US$60 per month
User donations = US$ 0-8 per month

If ads can merely pay for hosting services then I would be happy. There are other costs too.

@Team
Sorry for hijacking but did not find a better/recent thread in this subject.

Would the Patreon work better for the project than PayPal donations? As far as i understand Patreon offers steady income every month which may be better than one time donations.

Myself (as Porteus Kiosk project representative) would be willing to become a patron :)
Kiosk users utilize this forum so its natural we should participate in the hosting costs.

If you think its not worth the hassle with setting up the Patreon account then I'll send PayPal donation.

EDIT://
Actually i have realized PayPal allows for recurring payments. So whats the reason of the hype around Patreon?
Everyone seems to be using it now ...

Hey fanthom,

I haven't looked into patreon but you're right, everyone is using it. I even saw a dog trainer using it well. I'll take a look.

i think one thing with patreon(for creators/content providers) is that it provides a platform for exclusive(incentives for patrons) content as well the recurring payment system..
probably liberapay https://liberapay.com/ is more in line with what porteus is about.. ie. nonprofit, opensource..

Main problem with PayPal is that http://porteus.org/donate.html is not updated since 2017. If users could see donations it would be self controlling flow and self doping - many people pay/help, I can also a little or average amount, because I see another (psychological bandwagon effect or herd/crowd/help effect). When target is reached donations may be slower because users see target is reached and no more money is needed (If you don't see your donation or its sum then they may land in the space :wall:). For example plan for 2014/2015 was reached in the middle of 2014 - 2014/2015 hosting targets reached. From my point of view portals like Patreon are especially profitable for artists and amateurs (not artisans, technicians), people with trendy, accurate, educational, social skills or talents ("mind over matter" ) like Australian motivational speaker Nick Vujicic (absence of arms and legs give him even more attention) or his polish counterpart Adam Szustak OP (on patronite.pl he is first in ranking with 65040 zł per month and 786188 zł total, $1 ~ 4 zł), and it is full-time job for them. I know Porteus is "idea worth spreading" (cited from https://www.ted.com/) but I don't know how technical skill could be shown with WOW!!!! effect constantly (once done/shown task - once payed). Furthermore 5%+5% fees on Patrone. And if hosting provider keeps price for the few years should it not be changed?

Good points tome. The costs of a website is more than money it's also work.

On https://blog.patreon.com/rewards-software-developers are some examples of rewards for developers. First point could be adopted by Porteus, especially Kiosk version - sponsors logos on Desktop background or on Screensaver. But is Patreon place where companies search ways of advertising, building trust in communities or spend their charity benefit funds? Is functionality of Patreon stronger than its advertising? You can try expose Porteus on such "market".

Patreon is not only for artist and content providers, i believe its good for all projects/activity which lacks direct funding. Here is sample for open source project:

You should be aware that PayPal can suspend at anytime your account because you're receiving "too much money" without being registered as a company/organization/whatever.
