Duckduck go

We need a way to promote the use of duckduck go within our browsers. It's use is slowly declining and it is one of the ways in which users can support Porteus.

IDEAS:
  • Include a browser in Porteus
We could have a day where all users search for 20 items using duckduckgo
Any other ideas?

There has been a howto somewhere around here on how to set duckduckgo as default search engine with the needed parameters for porteus to get some funds.

It would be nice to automatically set duckduckgo as default search engine when installing a browser using the update tool shipped with porteus.

This is currently the case. It's just that people may not know they can get the browsers through this tool. In any case the number of searches has dropped dramatically.

It is my fault, I do not come as often on the forum.

yes, all the update scripts insert duckduckgo(porteus) as the default search engine, except opera , which is resistant to tinkering under the hood..
in its case, the user needs to create a new search engine entry using the https://duckduckgo.com/?t=porteus&q= address..
(i havn't been able to figure out where this setting is stored)..

something else worth noting is the use of ! (bangs) https://duckduckgo.com/bang
this way you can use whatever search engine(or specific site search) via duckduckgo,
eg. !g somesearch will use google but without its tracking(which some might find to be a downside, since the search won't be tailored to you :p)
there are hundreds of bangs
some handy ones:
!pkgs (pkgs.org)
!arch (archwiki)
!gentoo (gentoowiki)
!git (github)

Any stats on monthly/weekly usage for the past few months? Anything coincide with the drop? Vrsn 4.0? Particular brower update? duckduckgo server problem?

Most browser updates keep the user's existing settings so an update shouldn't be the problem but .... Any way to track usage by browser? Or global location?

A Google ad on the webpage, similar to https://portableapps.com/forums/general ... discussion

I quite like this idea but with a banner style ad so it doesn't push the forum to one side. Now I just need someone that has the time to research how this is done.

I don't know how much of the problem I am but I've found that when I use Porteus in my AF ' mode (AF, plus modules I use, plus a module of my changes,) Firefox has Google as the default search engine. :o When I use Porteus in my full update mode, with the changes=EXIT option, Firefox has DuckDuckGo as the default search engine. Somehow that option is not getting carried over to my save changes module. :%) A 4.0 change maybe? :unknown:

I'll find out where Firefox is saving this config option and add it to my changes module.

FWIW What I save for Firefox.

Code: Select all

# -- Browser files - Firefox --
FFPATH=`grep "Path=" /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini`; FFPATH=${FFPATH:5}
cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/plugins /tmp/mod/
cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/profiles.ini /tmp/mod/
cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/places.sqlite /tmp/mod/
cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/formhistory.sqlite /tmp/mod/
cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/prefs.js /tmp/mod/
cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/xulstore.json /tmp/mod/
cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/logins.json /tmp/mod/
cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/permissions.sqlite /tmp/mod/
cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/key3.db /tmp/mod/
cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/content-prefs.sqlite /tmp/mod/
if [ -f /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/extensions/* ]; then
   cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/extensions/* /tmp/mod/
fi

-update-

Think I found it.

Code: Select all

cp -a --parents /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/$FFPATH/search.json.mozlz4 /tmp/mod/

-update-

Yup, that works. :celebrate3:

It's bad idea, because the best positions for forum:
  1. Below Header
  2. After 1st post
  3. Above footer
in 728X90 resolution (728 x 90 – Leaderboard).

BTW, you can to do this with Advertisement Management (installed at our board)
Position Name Position Code Action
Above Header {ADS_1} Edit | Delete
Below Header {ADS_2} Edit | Delete
Above Posts {ADS_3} Edit | Delete
Below Posts {ADS_4} Edit | Delete
After First Post {ADS_5} Edit | Delete
After Every Post Except First {ADS_6} Edit | Delete
Above Footer {ADS_7} Edit | Delete
Below Footer {ADS_8} Edit | Delete
Sidebar Left {ADS_9} Edit | Delete
Sidebar Right {ADS_10} Edit | Delete
External Block {ADS_11} Edit | Delete

With google AdSense you will get many money - it's not joke :magic:
I don't know why you don't use it :%)
