Have you ever tried Knoppix? It is known for its good Hardware debug capabilities. Maybe it is able to give you some Info what works and what not. Know that there is a CD and DVD ISO version but for just checking if the newest version would run on your PC the CD ISO is sufficient.

nice. .. anyhow for running real old and Low on RAM PCs I recommend a small Puppy or DSL.
I myself used Puppy QuirkyNOP for really old and weak machines.

But nowadays I want my machines to be able to handle Xfce Porteus. xD


Mnnn we should move all these non rc4 posts somewhere else? Another moderator got an good idea? Like a new thread e.g. "low on RAM PCs / alternatives to Porteus"? Could someone please do so.... moving multiple posts using the Android browser is like severe pain in the lower back...

I really don't see problems with using current Porteus on what are now considered low spec machines. Of course your needs dictate the specs required, but for everyday browsing, email, building xzm's, these old dinosaurs still work fine for me. Tasks like gaming and rendering animations will shut them down quite quickly, but I don't do those things. Porteus works, and it works well while still being a lightweight system which offers everything I need. The same cannot be said for a large number of distributions that claim "lightweight" status.

I've seen countless "low spec" machines simply tossed into garbage bins by the same people clamoring for environmental protection. Along with being irresponsible, it also seems somewhat hypocritical.

I agree. .. many people say that PCs older than 5 years are way too outdated to be used nowadays.

To me any multi core machine able to handle minimum 4 GB of RAM is good enough to keep for most everyday tasks. ..
