@francois, how much faster and when exactly? How did you measure it?

Just some impression for now with the palemoon browser based on cpu values and memory. However, mpv with smplayer seem to take more cpu and memory under slax.

Edit:
No benchmark at all. Bananas have to be compared to bananas. My porteus system has a lot of additional packages.

SLAX 9.3
1.0 Startup file is in /root/.fluxbox/autostart
Where in it should I put a command to start an application in autostart?
Given that I have installed:

Code: Select all

apt-get install smplayer mpv ffmpeg
For example, at which line should I insert?

Code: Select all

smplayer &
to get it loaded at bootup.

Edit:
Answer
Just before string:

Code: Select all

# We want to run systrayicon only after the volumeicon
seems to be a good place. But I would be open to a better proposition.

2.0 In the file structure, I have three partitions:

Code: Select all

root@slax:~# lsblk
NAME MAJ:MIN RM SIZE RO TYPE MOUNTPOINT
loop0 7:0 0 90M 1 loop /run/initramfs/memory/bundles/01-core.sb
loop1 7:1 0 41M 1 loop /run/initramfs/memory/bundles/01-firmware.sb
loop2 7:2 0 20.8M 1 loop /run/initramfs/memory/bundles/02-xorg.sb
loop3 7:3 0 18.5M 1 loop /run/initramfs/memory/bundles/03-desktop.sb
loop4 7:4 0 16.1M 1 loop /run/initramfs/memory/bundles/04-apps.sb
loop5 7:5 0 59.7M 1 loop /run/initramfs/memory/bundles/05-chromium.sb
sda 8:0 0 119.2G 0 disk
├─sda1 8:1 0 48.8G 0 part
├─sda2 8:2 0 1K 0 part
├─sda5 8:5 0 39.1G 0 part
├─sda6 8:6 0 30.4G 0 part /run/initramfs/memory/data
└─sda7 8:7 0 1023M 0 part
zram0 254:0 0 512M 0 disk
root@slax:~#
As slax folder with .sb or bundles is installed on sda6, I find the content of sda6 in /run/initramfs/memory/data/:

Code: Select all

root@slax:~# ls /run/initramfs/memory/data/
backgrounds-anciens lost+found Movies sda5 slax TV
root@slax:~#
I would prefer to find this information into /mnt/sda1, /mnt/sda5 and /mnt/sda6. Trying to modify fstab did kept the changes. How can I mount these partitions?

hi francois, i can confirm you the sotware installed via apt at reboot is lost and if you run fdisk -l you can see and mount all the device that you have but no via pcmanfm so we can use it only for kiosk use, that is not mine.

Hello beny. On the 9.3 version the new cheatcode for persistence is slax.flags=perch, automount in syslinux.cfg:

Code: Select all

LABEL default
MENU LABEL Run Slax (Persistent changes)
KERNEL /slax/boot/vmlinuz
APPEND vga=normal initrd=/slax/boot/initrfs.img load_ramdisk=1 prompt_ramdisk=0 rw printk.time=0 slax.flags=perch,automount
It seems to be new, perch alone seemed to be enough in the previous version.

Looks like a hurriedly assembled useless offering...

Those who are not able to connect to 'wifi', please try,

Get your 'interface' name from a terminal command,
ip a
Then, use the following command in terminal,
wpa_supplicant -i [interface name] -c <(wpa_passphrase "SSID name" "wifi password")
you will be connected, keep this terminal window open and use one more window for any work.

or you can enter the interface name in Network manager-preferences, and enter password in the new dialogue box and connect.

The new Slax 9.3.0 and the one previous which did not have wireless leaves much to be desired. IMHO the old Slax and Porteus are many times better and have more out of the plain iso than Slax. I understand the time issues, packaging, recompiling which Tomas expresses why he made the change to Debian. My nephew likes it though. Good for him. He does not care that systemd is there and he likes it the way it is. He wants to play games and does not care about the init. If the packaging and recompiling become a problem, I would recommend to fanthom and brokenman to release a (LiveKit, like the Linux Live kit that Tomas makes and is the base for Slax). A bare minimum base like volid linux, install everything you want the way you want it and build a live version of your OS. Otherwise, we can use SlackwareLive from alienbob, it contains everything we could ever want and run mostly every desktop there is like the new lumina. The other way would be to install a minimum base and use pkgsrc, ravenports or the xbps src package(from voidlinux) and make your linux like you want it. Slackware is alive and kicking. And systemd is still away. I have other OSes installed also, DragonFlyBSD and FreeBSD on some of my machines if something catastrophic were to happen, they would take over my PCs. The great thing is that Porteus is a live medium and I can run it wherever it runs. :celebrate3:

Tonio, I did not remember your face. But with this photo of yours, I am sure I will never forget.

I am presently with debian9. At least Tomas seemed to make a better choice than going for ubuntu.

Personnally, I keep one of his beta release. Its not that bad. And debian provides a very wide pasture.

Did you tried porteus nemesis based on arch linux? I am sure you will leave bsd. ;)

@francois
I tried the beta, it was too plain did not have anything good, no dc, no bc, no good/useful commands from terminal. The nemesis based (Arch) Porteus as well I did not like either. Lacked any useful apps, and also has pile of manure called * :(. But I did not want to give it thumbs down, because some people do like it. At school where I work, I have two machines running freebsd, two running slackware64_current, two running Dragonfly and one running void with musl . As long as systemd is away from Slackware, I will run it. I like void a great deal as well. But as ditching BSD I do not think that will happen. I really like it and I am very comfortable running them. I also run Austrumi in copy2ram mode, and a USB stick with Porteus and kertex module. Old version.

The new slax looks nice and has the gazillion packages available from Debian through apt get, but for me it is cursed. It has the big fungus. Maybe if it was based on Devuan then I would give it more if a chance.

The face is a combination of Linux with BSD beastie daemon. I have also used OpenIndiana , I like it but have not much time to play with it :(.

Congratulations Tomas M! You did a great job in setting up a lightweight debian based live distro. I'm sure many people will love it. It allows one to get up and running and onto the net quickly which is what the majority of people want these days.
but. .. then it should have WLAN / wifi support build in by default.

If anyone is interested in this tutorial I explain how I create my own bundles on my handmade Debian LiveCD.

Michele13's LiveCD

In this document all I wanted to do was to create a Porteus-like distro based on Debian :)

Wow Michele13,
I just went through your document and you have done brilliant work. Congratulations! :hi:

I myself have zero knowledge about debian and its pkg manager (apt and dpkg), but reading your doc and also based on a comment you made elsewhere about debian being as rock solid as slackware you are right.

Some thoughts for you to consider (Maybe you already have)
- Your livecd scripts should also work with devuan (they recently released 2.0), the difference being ofcourse devuan, unlike debian is systemd free (which must please most users of our community)
- Maybe also compatible with MX Linux (debian based, includes systemd, but only for package compatibility, their init is still sysvinit). But they have risen to no. 7 on distrowatch, which means they are doing things right. And they have knowledge and experience, them being the community behind mepis.

Thanks again for sharing your work :good:

@michele13:
Your post is somewhat out topic. May we move it to the general chat section with a new title, unless it could be qualified as a porteus derivative. :)
edited as for more clarity.
