Porteus

Has anyone used the deepin desktop? What do you think about it? Is it heavy or rather lean compared to the other desktop we are accustomed here in the porteus distribution?

What about papyros? Or do you have some preferences for without desktop, window manager only?

I have tested the live-cd, but I'm a bit scared at the controversial https://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments ... overnment/ with the custom chinese kernel. Sure it has all the bells and whistles of a new and fresh desktop, but since I've discovered Budgie through Mate and provided the active development of both Ike Doherty (Budgie) and Martin Wimpress (Mate), I think I've came home. Budgie desktop has everything I've been looking for since the Gnome desktop gave birth to Cinnamon, Mate, Unity, etc. etc. etc. Will keep an eye to Mate as well.

In the past 8 years or so, I've been using XFCE as main distro and Porteus Mate on the road. Now, Bugie has take over in both scenarios.

Concerning the chineese, the americans have been already spying on us befor Obama, don't they.

And it seems that some computer brands are putting a special chip on modern computer to have access to these whenever they want: missing reference from this porteus forum.

So as budgie came with an ubuntu basis, it must have been slow or was that desktop any better for the beast?

I tested both the full distro and the DE for Porteus (thanks to neko), and I think it's really well done! Both in terms of aesthetics and usability -- reminds me of MacOS. However, it's very resource hungry, so it's not a DE I would use on my daily basis.

I have one from Debian Dog Porteus derivative with Deepin Desktop (15.3). Excellent. An entirely different, innovative presentation for a Desktop. I didn't notice any drop in speed of execution of applications. I use that OS for GTK Video Downloader, which is not available under USM.

I have seen Deepin full Desktop in a friend's PC, 15.4.1 version. Very stable. Surprisingly It comes with my native font , Tamil(UTF-8 : code ta) too.(I use Latha.ttf from Windows in Porteus)

Very modern,attractive and will appeal to all looking for a "change".

Neko's offering somehow not working well in my old Laptop.

Fulalas, Porteus can add this DE to version 4, if feasible.

I'm running neko's APorteus Budgie with 630 Mb of ram usage. I wouldn't say this is resource hungry nowdays.

I'm for minimalism, and great anti-bloatware activist. However, it's too late for me, I'm also a eye candy dependant...

In the end, I think usability is a compromise between best performance vs. best appearance, and honestly, I think Budgie is bloatware aware (and mutter is lighter and more responsive than gnome-shell), and has the good looking I ever wanted for XFCE.

However I understand your point. And I would die defending your right to express it.

Not when LXQt takes less than 250 MB of RAM and its responsiveness is way better than Deepin.

The problem with lxqt is that there is no desktop session savings.

It's not that simple, francois. You should try Calculate distro on a VM to see how beautiful it is.

Hmmm... How this works? Does it restore all opened windows during last session? Is it really useful?

In fact, I realised that what I like so much in Elementary os is the dock. I realised that its name is plank. I can be installed on xfce, cinnamon, open box, amongst others:plank the elementary desktop of elementary os

I have tried it. I do not want to upset you but, the only peculiarity seems that it is gentoo based. Personally, with the nice wallpaper you have provided with your xfce4 desktop, I am sure I would rather go for porteus 4.0. You know the wallpaper with row boats on a country river. Where is located that wonderful countryside?

@francois, you'll have to work harder to upset me, hahaha! What I like about Xfce of the Calculate distro is that everything seems harmonic and professional, especially the icon theme. Oh, and I hate that Whisker menu of our Xfce, so every Xfce that comes without it has my vote.

BTW, brokenman is the one who made the Xfce module for Porteus 4. I just did some minor tweaks to shrink its size
