I would like to see the Desktop Wizard continued because it's extremely newbie friendly.

Cheers,

Johannes

Please, for a newbie it is a pain in the a** to have an os without a gui-browser and office suite. I would really appreciate if you would bring back the Wizard (maybe with a donation only option and a one or two dollar fee etc.).

Please, please, bring back the Desktop Wizard! :(

I understand frostalin. :happy62: But it isn't that hard when downloading a Porteus ISO from here: http://dl.porteus.org/x86_64/Porteus-v3.2.2/ to click on the /modules folder here: http://dl.porteus.org/x86_64/Porteus-v3.2.2/modules/ and download a browser and office suite to put into the Porteus module folder that you install. It's just an extra step you have to remember to do.

As the thread was somewhat old (2014), it was splitted for those who would like the wizard to be back.

The complexity of how Porteus is built makes the running of Porteus Download Wizard not easy. Sorry about that.

Hi Hamza. Could a modified approach be created? One that supports a user selecting a prebuilt ISO and then selecting modules to add to it rather than buildiing a customized ISO?

1) Sure, a simplified and basic version would offer the basic isos with DE and then modules à la carte: browsers, word processors, bundles.

Then people would install the iso and be instructed to locate modules in the modules directory.

2) Another way would be at the installation or booting phase of porteus:
Do you want to install a browser?
Other packages like a word processor?

The main issue here seems to be with the browser. Maybe palemoon should be provided stock.

Are you able to modify the Porteus Wizard to do that francois? :good:

This approach would require the installer of the downloaded Porteus to be online when doing the install. That may be unexpected and inconvenient. Having everything downloaded at one time is a better approach.

Shouldn't be a problem, as there is now a slackware PM package. Only fiddling required would be with regard to setting up duckduckgo parameter. :)

Whose going to rebuild all the Porteus ISOs to include the PM modules?

brokenman might think this would be a good idea and provide it for 4.1 :)

Or simply once porteus is installed some kind of update-packages or update-porteus with questions.

In the interim we have 3.2.2 with no Download Wizard. Quicker to modify/make a new script for new/update users.

I am all for a Porteus Setup Wizard. It's the same as the online wizard but it is done client side. It could handle other problem areas too such as setting up changes. :good:

So, a user downloads an ISO at work/school/cafe/friend's house, goes home and attempts to install it and finds out he needs to use his dial-up connection/cell phone to download a browser to add to it. That doesn't sound very friendly to me.

And when would new users see a Setup Wizard? It's not is 3.2.2. What are they to use until 4.x is out? :%)
