The analysis of fanthom on the results of this poll and the performance of the two child of the porteus project inspired some reflexion.

Maybe novelty attracks more the attention and the 64 bit edition of kde was a major response to that novelty need.

However, let me express that porteus v1.0/32bit KDE-3.5.12 Trinity just does the job perfectly. I would add that this poll does not come at the ankle of the gratitude that I feel toward the team and especially the efforts of brokenman, that came out with the 32 bit edition.

Thanks, yes, thanks a lot.

seems that LXDE is getting slightly ahead of KDE-4. here is the latest screenshoot of LXDE for upcoming Porteus-1.1
http://oi55.tinypic.com/v3j8gj.jpg

what's new comparing to Porteus-1.0?
- porteus_black wallpaper (thanks to Hamza)
- gnome mplayer
- battery monitor applet (on the left of US flag)
- transparency for task manager
- other enchantments not visible on the screenshot

i'm sure you will like it :)

I could learn to love it. Someone should invent a new desktop environment. That hasn't been done for a while.

WoW  it's really sure I like it!
I cannot wait for the next Porteus 1.1! Of course you can understand that I voted for LXDE!
I use the LXDE Porteus 32bit version on my netbook (Intel Atom N450 - 2GB RAM) and the KDE version Porteus x64 on my laptop (intel core i7 - 8GB RAM). Anyway LXDE rocks, very very fast and lately I am only using the LXDE everywhere.
I am using the Porteus 32bit in these last days because I have 99% of 32bit applications in my modules folder... It's not the right time of 64bit editions.... I could say more: if with 2GB of RAM in my netbook I "fly", what does mean having 8GB of RAM on Linux (then necessary x64bit edition)?

No way. By the time i finished ... desktops would be a thing of the past.
Trinity! She needs some love.
Too right! She's like an old prostitute that was brought back from the dead ... dressed in new clothes and makeup & put back out to work. The joints are a little creaky and worn and she has a few bugs, but you get your moneys worth! (I am so rude sometimes. Sorry.)

Thank you for apologizing, brokenman. Your comments hit entirely too close to home.

Gnome environment does not seem to have the popularity of other desktop. A try of pureos 4.0 gnome environment, a live cd might change your mind, see:

I do not care for Xfce when it is set to the default look and feel, but it's an all-around easy-to-use DE. And, not to sound too awful negative, but... I don't really care for the look and feel of LXDE, personally. KDE's great, but it's big and bulky. Gnome Shell is the greatest innovation since the Macintosh in '84, even though people seem angry at it. The cons of Gnome Shell? It's slow, and there is no way to get the 'desktop paradigm' back that existed in Gnome 2. Anyway :).... just my thoughts..........

It seems to me LXDE will win the popularity survey. . . . .
For a portable system kde4 will be not practical. Although akonadi and similar packages look to the future, the demand of storage space for databases is simply too big for an usb-pendrive, at least by now. Attached is a snapshot of kde4.7.3 in Porteus v1.1-i486 aka 32-bits with akonadi console working.

Regards!
Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).

I think you're right Wread although fanthom has managed to squeeze everything possible out of existing kde4. You're screeny looks awesome and i'd like to add the kde4 modules to the repo if possible.

I was planning on recompiling Trinity desktop to the latest version ... but it appears that nobody loves her :(

nobody wants kde-4 as is too heavy, nobody wants Trinity as it's not modern enough.
is LXDE the only way to go for Porteus?
should we drop second DE and focus on LXDE as the only option?
or maybe create single desktop KDE/LXDE/XFCE edition like other distros?
that would be easier for devs (LXDE could get some extra apps after dropping KDE), but where to find maintainers for each edition?

the way it is the usual, two desktop manager if not work one you have the other, one desktop manager distro isn't a good idea,
