Games: what about your favorite game on linux

Post#1 by francois » 17 Jul 2011, 05:05

In this thread, I would like to hear about your favorite game, its name and the reason you like it so much. Also, if you got the module or the link to the package for this game of yours, it would be so much appreciated.

This is a quite pessimistic statement. And if you make an effort, what would be your linux favorite game?

After all kde games is not so bad:

I like kigo and kmahjong included within the overall package.

Lots of games are native on Linux as well. Some of the best known are Wesnoth and OpenArena.

There's also the UT series (with the exception of UT3) and all the various Humble Indie Bundle games.

And for Porteus, any of these should be easy to pull in.

Wan great games for GNU/Linux and other free Operating Systems?

Kobo is a space shooter game in 2d. Destroy the enemy starbases piece by piece avoiding their defenses. The last stage is a starbase which fills the whole screen!!!

FreeDroid is a Diablo like RPG. MS has conquered the IT world, and most robots run an MS operating system in their heads. Of course, it breaks badly, so the robots start killing everybody and you have to fight them to save mankind!

Chromium B.S.U. is a frantic space shooter in which you must prevent the enemy ships from outstanding your position. There is not a single second to rest. It is like the classical Space Invaders, but there are more enemies, more weapons, it is FAST and cool.

You should try also the bsd-games package some distros offer. It has many games from the text-mode age, including:

Phantasia: Role play. Find unicorns. Defeat the Darklord and Saruman. Find virgins and do things to them :Rose: Become a King. Find the Holy Grial. Then become a God. There are 9999 of fun. I am allways killed at level 16 or so.

Trek You are captain Kirk, and you have to take every Klingon ship down before they conquer the Federation. It is an strategy game where you manage your ship via command line, asking for reports about damages, amno, radar scans etc. and commanding your crew to do your will. RTFM, or you will crash against a star or burn your engines by spending too much power by accident.

http://www.mediafire.com/?krbmwl1iwb4bo
Notice: the the 0.3.0 is an experimental build so it is unstable and there is an issue with the sound.

This thread is dangerous !!!! One should give in to temptation, for it may never come your way again!

If anybody wants to make modules of the games, and separate modules of deps i would be happy to put them on our server.

Gaming is addictive. It is not good for your health. Use should be done with moderation.

Hello, men.

I am trying to write a PorteusBuid for Kobo. I have managed for building the required dependencies with no problem, but the game itself is a little challenge.

It seems to be affected by a bug that prevents it from compile with the GCC I'm trying to use. I can solve it with a patch from the Debian team, I think, but I have a some questions.

If I compiled Kobo with a GCC version that is not availible in Porteus, nor Slackware, but tha game worked in both of them, the module would be acceptable?

I can build the dependencies by merging many packages in one module, or making half a dozen small modules. Which one is the prefered method? I mean, for example, that Kobo can run with only SDL and SDL_image. In Slackware, SDL is provided in a mega-package with tons of SDL_* (although it is under 700 Kb). Shall I emulate this mega-package in order to keep some similitudes with Slackware?

The mega-package offers ease of install for the user and causes no much size bloating, and provides a very complet implementation of SDL. What do you think?

Posted after 15 hours 55 minutes 4 seconds:
Good news:

The issue with Kobo seems to be resolved.

Also, I have taken advantage of the fact that I need SDL to test Warmux too. Warmux is a mass fighting-without-too-much thinking game, in which each team plays in turns to exterminate each other. Who has played worms knows what I am talking about.

I have to test both and ensure they work during normal use. I think I will upload them soon.

Cheers.

To be honest ... i don't play games anymore. When i was much younger i enjoyed a little herb and a little gaming. Just a few years back i installed some FPS war game ... american army i think ... and spent many late times with adrenalin coursing through my veins. I saw the sun rise many times. I had to remove the game, and these days if i have the time to play games, i spend it on more productive things. If your friends try to talk you into playing games ... "Just say no!"

I have recently posted a PorteusBuild for Warmux here:

http://www.porteus.org/forum/viewtopic. ... 5458#p5458

It is basically the same build that is located in SlackBuilds.org, with a more compressed sound (doing so saves much room) and one or two config options disabled.

Of course, if you want to have the original sound quality, you'd better grab the original SlackBuild script. It is supposed to work on Porteus.

I hope you enjoy both Kobo and Warmux!
