Installing on a 3.0 USB Stick

Hi everyone. I'm having trouble installing porteus 3.2.2 on a 3.0 usb stick. I knew that there were some people having this trouble before the release so I waited for the final release. Unfortunately I couldn't install it straight through... Can anyone please point where I can find a solution? The problem is that after the initial menu it is not recognizing the USB. I read before that it was a slackware driver issue on the 3.1 Porteus.

This approach is a whole lot easier:

viewtopic.php?f=81&t=4632#p33604

I used it last week with 3.2.2 and the USB drive boots fine.

Thank you all for the replies. Ed_P, does this approach works with a not 64bit computer? Sometimes I use some 2010-2013 computers, I'm not sure if they are able to detect/boot UEFI since not all of them have the option in the BIOS to boot in UEFI. I supose that for those computers I'm doomed to not use my pretty much loved Porteus, is that right?

Best regards,

If you use a x32 version of Porteus it will. And it works on non-EFI pcs also. My main netbook is non-EFI.

Hi Ed_P,

I still can't get to pass through this message, just after choosing the boot option in the initial Porteus menu:

^searching for porteus-v3.2-i586.sgn file
^device not ready yet? delaying 1 seconds

Porteus data not found.
You are maybe using an unsupported boot device (eg. SCSI or old PCMCIA).
Workaround:... (I believe you know the rest of the message, if you don't I can gladly write it for you).

How can I solve this?

Thanks,

Best regards,

Lucas.

How did you install Porteus to the USB drive Lucas? Did you use Windows? What type of pc are you using, BIOS or EFI?

There is a cheatcode that can be added to the menu that might help. The menu is in the porteus.cfg file in the /boot/syslinux/ folder. To the APPEND line add " delay=10" and see if that helps.

Hi Ed_P,

Well, my fist attempts were made using a "create live USB" module that I found in another post (can't say for sure but I believe that you posted that module in the thread I read). I tried all the possible options available. I tried also formatting the USB using GParted and Disk Utility booting with a Mint Linux Live CD ( I don't have a good formatting module in my current old Porteus so it was easier to use a CD that I had), after that I entered in the terminal in the boot folder and run the bash Porteus-installer-for-Linux.com. I'm doing this tests and installations in a Dell Vostro 1310 and a Dell Vostro 3550. Both have BIOS, one is 64bit and the other 32bit. I tried the delay=10 that you suggested but didn't solved my issue.

Thanks,

Lucas.

hmmmm... Please display the output of this command for your USB drive.

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ ls /mnt/sdb1/porteus/
base/ make_iso.sh* modules/ optional/ porteus-v3.2-x86_64.sgn* rootcopy/
guest@porteus:~$
And how are your booting the USB drive?

Hi Ed_P,

Today I use an old Porteus version that boots normally and was made without problems with the regular installation procedures (afterwards I did some modifications in the boot menu and other things). This version is in a 60gb MicroSD and boots with an USB adaptor.

doing the command "ls /mnt/sdb1/porteus/" that you asked in the sdb1 it gives:

root@porteus:~# ls /mnt/sdb1/porteus/
base/ changes/ make_iso.sh* modules/ optional/ porteus-v3.1-i486.sgn* rootcopy/
root@porteus:~#

After plugging in the SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 32 gb (the device I'm having trouble with) and doing the same command (modifying to sdc1) it gives:

root@porteus:~# ls /mnt/sdc1/porteus/
base/ make_iso.sh* modules/ optional/ porteus-v3.2-i586.sgn* rootcopy/
root@porteus:~#

Best regards,

Lucas.

Did you see this posting Lucas? viewtopic.php?f=61&t=1558#p10881

Did you format the flash drive to FAT32 or did it come that way?

And these? viewtopic.php?f=81&t=6293&start=15 viewtopic.php?f=81&t=1738

It didn't click that your problem may be a USB 3.0 drive issue. (read the title Ed!) The USB drives I'm installed Porteus to are not USB 3.0, the ports I plug them into are.

@ Lucas
I own a (cnmemory) USB3 thumb drive which did seldom boot, let's say 1 of 20 tries,
(ext2 no UEFI) until i used the UUID string in porteus.cfg.
Search the UUID string for your device with the blkid command and copy it into
the porteus.cfg so it looks like

Code: Select all

APPEND initrd=initrd.xz from=UUID:"9149f059-8e73-4687-be34-10dd3903ccb4" changes=UUID:"9149f059-8e73-4687-be34-10dd3903ccb4"/porteus
all in 1 line, and of course you must replace my UUID string with yours.
Could be worth a try...

^ Hint, Do not need to use whole UUID string in porteus.cfg, just sufficient to make it unique.
