Boot Failures

Post#1 by CafeRay » 26 Jun 2011, 21:52

I just downloaded "Porteus-v1.0-i486.iso" and tried the boot CD on several computers.

It ran fine on a DELL PowerEdge sc420, but it failed to complete the boot sequence
on the following computers:

DELL Dimension 2400 (Pentium 4 2.4 GHz)
DELL Optiplex GX260 (Pentium 4 2.66 GHz)
Compaq Presario SR1910NX (AMD Semperon 3200+)

On the Averatec 3700 Laptop (AMD Movile Semperon 3000)
it booted successfully, but automatically selected the display resolution so large
that the desktop overflows the screen.

On the PowerEdge sc420 I was able to scan for my wireless router, connect, browse YouTube, and play online videos.
I could not discover how to mount external USB drives.

hello CafeRay,
could you give us more details about boot failures?
does it hang during GUI initialization or earlier? what's the last string before error?
did you try proprietary GPU drivers: fglrx (only HD cards are supported) and nvidia from our repo?

does it hang every time the same way?

"On the Averatec 3700 Laptop (AMD Movile Semperon 3000)

pls run 'psinfo' utility, upload content of it to pastebin.com and post link to it over here.

"I could not discover how to mount external USB drives."
use this command:
'mkdir /tmp/usb-stick && mount /dev/sdXy /tmp/usb-stick'
replace Xy with your drive letter/partition number
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.
