[SOLVED] 30 miles from home and off the wall

Porteus friends,

I'm a Porteus user and fan. I ask this here because of the positive attitude, having never experienced otherwise on this, my favorite, preferred Linux and forum.

Mom's in a Nursing Home. I visit at least once a week. They have a computer for the residents, but it is Windows, and "nobody" knows the password. Presently the computer is an "Official Paper-Weight" !

I have been given permission to install Linux and make the thing useable for the residents. I'm considering installing Porteus Kiosk, but I can't get past the following after I use my Porteus v2-i486 (in my pocket at all times, for a long time:-)

Loading ........... vmlinuz
Loading ........... initrd.xz ...... ready

and that never changes, it just sits there. I get there from F-12 (on the Windoze system) which allowes me to choose the boot.

Any suggestions as to how to get past this, overide this, or whatever? Ed_P, or donald, you fella's seem to be my go-2's when I do a search here?

Sean

Hello Sean,

Are you trying to boot kiosk or Desktop edition? If Desktop then please add 'debug' flag and kernel should print where it hangs.

@Ed:
The idea is good to install a grub2 bootloader, but I think that porteus kiosk runs with syslinux. I think that fanthom will guide sean with porteus kiosk iso or usb install:
http://porteus-kiosk.org/wizard.html

Maybe we should perform some install on a usb key or on a cd just to familiarize ourselves with porteus kiosk. It is a shame that we do not know that essential system installation more than that. Fanthom should be paid back with good quality support for kiosk.

@fanthom:
It seems that porteus kiosk will use a full hdd and will not work on a simple partition. Is it the case?

Actually I was referring more to the posting by donald that followed and told how to recover/remove passwords.

Please read the porteus kiosk documentation page which explains everything in perfect detail. You can burn the ISO to a CD or use 'dd' to 'burn' the iso file to an external device.

Hi sean
It's easy to blank the Windows password.
http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
have you already tried to boot the flash drive with the use of plop?
I'm asking because i have a similar situation. My flash drive is
detected and displayed in the F-Key boot menue, but it doesn't
boot, it get stuck, so i have to use plop.

Thanks Donald, Someone put a Windows 7 Password on my wife sister Dell computer. Now I might be able to fix it.

@francois
There is a way to install kiosk to a partition (described in kiosk section of the forum) but it will never be official as a dont want kiosk user to mess with bootloaders.
simpler = better

Lets stick to the topic.

Sorry for hijacking this post. It is a good thing to know that kiosk works with usb key or cd or dvd only, not on hdd. This was not evident to me. It seems that I might begin some dementia Alzheimer type possibly because of familial background. :(

This means that sean has to find how to set bios to boot usb key directly or as it is my case on my msi 340x to know which key to press while the box is booting to get the linux usb key to boot. :)

hi Sean,the hang at this level of boot can be noveau driver, if you want try a cd with porteus inside so you can check if work or not,the usb port that can't work..try another usb port,and porteus in always fresh mode, syslinux work great i have used it in a lot of hardware without any trouble.
