Avoid SanDisk in any case. Have been problems in that department. :wall:

Gee, I have at least 5 of them, 2 of the U3 models, and have never had a problem with any of them. But if somone has a problem SanDisk has a free replacement policy.

It's not possible to give a serious recommendation for a specific brand, because
the Quality seems to change from day to day.
Unlike Bogomips i never had problems with SanDisk, but with Kingston or Verbatim.
Because of (some reported) Driver issues, I would not buy one for USB 3.
(or test before buying)

Missing Kernel module for latest SanDisk, or has that been fixed?

I don't know,.IIRC someone had a (boot)-prob with a SanDisk flash-drive,
but that wasn't me...my "SanDisks" work perfectly.

Personally I avoid any packaging that claims it includes "backup protection software" as that translates to firmware and I want the full size of drive/stick

2) There are a lot of people who get excited about the number of write cycles on usb sticks. I am not one of them.
If I buy a stick for around $5 do you really think I am not going to have additional backups somewhere?

So I always use journal formats on my sticks...ext4
and I learnt this in the days of drinking too much aussie beer and pulling the stick before un-mounting it.

Actually it's software and easily removed with a couple of deletes. And while good secure software too many people try to use it for all files they put on the stick: movies, backups and alike, and it slows write speed to a crawl.

Well, usually I "dd" every new usb-flash-drive before I use it.
But if the (any) device has a malicious firmware, you have already lost.
An usb-flash-drive isn't a simple box to put files in, it's a mini-computer
talking to your pc.
Many different devices can connect to your pc via usb...so how does the pc know
what kind of device is plugged in?...correct, it's the on-chip micro controller,
driven by the firmware telling it.
In fact a "bad" usb-flash can claim to be anything (e.g. keyboard or webcam or
a network card etc.), with all the resulting consequences.

What you can see within the filesystem (some backup software etc) isn't
that dangerous, more important is what is/could be placed into the overhang sectors
or the space between the bootsector and the beginning of the partition.
Therefore dd is the tool of choice.... 8)

Well put. The old school virii/malware infected your os or mbr. Now there are rootkits that live in your firmware and therefore survive a HD format or a resinstall of your OS. Hell there is even one that uses your speakers and microphone to transport data from an air gapped computer, with the network cards removed. Be careful what you stick in your ports.

Basically, if you are going to buy a USB drive make sure you know the source of the drive.

And don't place it in the microwave oven. It doesn't kill bugs.
