I need all your input.

I have a Acer nav-50 laptop should I remove Windows 7 and format it with ext4 and copy the ISO to the 160gb hard drive or should I leave Windows 7 and run Porteus from a 16gb thumb drive? Please give me your input yes or no.

Disclaimer
I am not responsible, what decision you will make.

Well, I do not use Windows anymore and I do not miss it.
But in your case, and as a rule of thumb, do not delete Windows
if you can not restore it.
Maybe later, when you are really sure that you don't need it anymore.

Have you enough (Linux) software for all your tasks / daily work?
Also make sure that all the (built in) Hardware is recognized and properly working
with porteus.(e.g. the Fn keys or your printer etc.)

I guest I should have said I have a spare 160gb hard drive to use. Both of my laptop's works 100% with Porteus Mate 3.1 as far as I can tell or what I have tested. Dose Porteus support Touch Screen yet? That will be my next laptop if I can find one I can buy.

No.

No.

A third option would be to:

Add a boot loader file to the hard drive. (grldr)
Add a boot loader menu file to the hard drive to boot Porteus. (menu.lst)
Update the Windows 7 BCD menu to including booting the boot loader. (bcdedit)
Copy the ISO to the hard drive.

Then:

Boot the machine.
Choose the grldr option.
Boot Porteus in GUI mode.
Create a Save.dat file.
Tweak the boot loader menu file to add the changes= cheat code pointing to the new save.dat file.
Reboot, Porteus or Windows :)

Well you wouldn't be doing it alone. What part concerns you? See if this posting helps you:

I think I will just stay with my 16gb thumb drive it is formatted ext4 with Porteus Mate 3.1. I been using it since Porteus Mate 2.1 with no bad luck at all. Thanks anyway.

Hello jack,

As Donald, I got rid of windows altogether. I did it some five years ago or more. My simple needs are well covered by Linux.

My opinion is that we should not infantilize you or any user on this forum. You should be informed and you should inform yourself. Knowledge is the key to liberty or to empowerment. 8)

The problem is if you change your mind. And this could happen as there are many packages that are unique to windows. However, I doubt that you could not find some Linux equivalent for free.

In addition, backing up and restoring windows and partitioning does not seem an easy procedure. See:
https://www.winhelp.us/restore-a-system ... ows-7.html

However, it you back up your vital non windows data (text files, pictures, videos), you could buy a new windows os, I imagine that this would be the worst scenario.

Think about it for some time. What do you have to loose? Are you ready to loose it all? What is it really worth? This will be your decision, all will be left is blaming, orhers maybe, but mainly yourself. 8)

Personally, I feel better without windows technically, but also socially, morally and philosophically.

I wouldn't blame anyone for what I did. I do have a image of my Windows 7 I can restore if I did change my mind. I going to stay with what I have for now.

I never use Windows 8 or 8.1 I just heard how bad it was. Well I install Windows 10 today. They can keep it and I hope Porteus never looks like that. So Porteus team keep up the good work.

Hey Jack, Windows 10 isn't that bad, compared to Windows 7. All my apps, freeware & shareware addons got converted, my Start menu favorites got converted, my browser Favorites got converted, my Task Bar items got converted and even my wallpaper. :good:

I didn't like the new Microsoft Edge browser since it didn't show my Favorites Bar so I changed the default browser to be Internet Explorer, which is a part of Windows 10, and now things look normal to me.

Still some things to get use to but it looks a LOT like Windows 7 at this point. :)
