Post#1 by francois » 08 May 2015, 18:02

I have a friend from Berlin, Germany. I live in Montreal. Thru wifi, what package should I use on my android phone to get the best communication with my friend from Berlin? :)

Thanks.

I think it really depends on your situation and end goal. Do you want encrypted communication, free communication, video calls etc?

I bought office 365 and with that you receive around 90 minutes per month of free skype calls. I use this to call my folks in Australia.
To speak with my friend I dial the numbers in the cell phone and use it for its intended purpose.

Viber is a pretty popular option nowadays as is whats up.

I predict that in the future manufacturers won't produce 'cell phones' any longer but rather a 'hand held device' that is primarily like a tablet with internet telephony. Most people I know very rarely use the phone part of their cell phones.
How do i become super user?

I don't use it, but some of my friends say that it rocks! I do not know actually.

Hi francois,

For free calls, if both of you are using smart phones, chances are both of u already have WhatsApp installed. In the chat window, click the phone button on the top right to make an audio call to your chat friend. New feature introduce a couple of months ago. If the phone icon is not there, upgrade your WhatsApp version.

There are other apps for audio and video call. Example Line, WeChat and those mentioned earlier(Skype and Viber). Previous version of Viber crashs a lot while I was using it.

The above require both ends to have the same apps installed. If you are looking to dial a landline or mobile phone, you may try GulfSIP. It has monthly free call credits to certain countries landline or mobile or both. Libon is another such application but the free credits will expire.

For calling to US and Canada from abroad, Google Voice is your best option as it is free and the quality is very good.

Google has changed Google Voice to Hangouts, I'm not sure whether the same steps still applicable.
Hangouts is a standard app in Android. On top of that, you will need to install the Google Hangouts Dialer app.
FYI Google premium call rates to international destinations are low as well.

Finally, there is a lot more to this for free or cheap phone calls issue.

Thanks to all.
