video editing software

Post#1 by francois » 15 Aug 2014, 00:57

***In progress***
It happens to me to take some video. Yet I did not transform myself into a movie director, but maybe I should think about it. Meanwhile I would appreciate a movie editor just to revise in details some movies. Not the ones you think.

I am a fan of karate and aïkido. Slow motion is kind of great to get a better eye on katas for example. For now kino suits me well, it would convert .mkv files into .dv files and them permit me to easily review them with the wheel of my logitech mouse (to do so you have to position your mouse pointer on the timeline line). There are are other video editor softwares that might suit one's need:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_vi ... g_software
http://www.techdrivein.com/2013/09/top- ... linux.html
. kino
. kdenlive
. cinerella
...

If you used one or another, or many of these video edition software please give us your impressions. They will be appreciated. :)

Hi francois

Kino should be enough for simple task.

If you want to do more professional editing, you may checkout Cinelerra posted by phhpro.

@francois
After downloaded the Cinelerra, I have not mess with it too.
Can't really find my ways through the buttons. Maybe need to download the manual and read up a bit.

Thanks slaxmax for the input. I did look at it. But lets say that my limited knowledge of brasilian hurts.

pitivi:
http://www.pitivi.org/
a Free video editor with a beautiful and intuitive user interface, a clean codebase and a fantastic community. Join us?
I will buy that. I will try it this week or the next as soon as I can get enough free time.

GSoC (Google Summer of Code at the Linux Foundation). Is google on the right side or on the wrong side? Julian Assange or NSA?

Thanks to both of you, cttan for pitivi and brokenman for making it readily available on usm (slackware-porteus). :D

@brokenman:
usm did not brought up all the necessary dependencies for pitivi. Is there something special here?
Thanks.

Quite right. Please remove the following file and then run usm -u all again. If you have updated in the last 3 hours it will skip all the slackware database files and just update the extra-deps.txt file.

Code: Select all

rm /etc/usm/extra-deps.txt
usm -u all
The update to USM hasn't been pushed to the server yet.

Started pitivi, and it couldn't even open an mp4 file :( Wants a codec. Tried VLC one without success. Would be helpful to know which one/set works best.

Pitivi Progress

Put together two clips, both mp4 with same characteristics, one 42MB, the other 32MB. Pitivi recommended ogg with Theora codec, giving resultant file of 54MB. Great I thought. Savings of 20MB. Played file, no picture, only sound. Ever since with other combinations giving both picture and sound, the whole has been greater than the sum of the parts, to be expected in psychology maybe ;), but not here where a significant reduction is to be expected. Now applying Handbrake (Wow, for the first time USM has made me a module I can use straight off!) to see if this will do the trick.

Original clips: 42M The\ Switch\ part\ 1.mp4 32M The\ Switch\ part\ 2.mp4

Combined clips:
78M The\ Switch.m4v
118M The\ Switch.mkv
93M The\ Switch.mp4
171M The\ Switch.wmv

Best so far 78MB as opposed to combined total of 74MB. So, next on agenda: reducing bit rate, framerate, CFR, x264, etc.
