packages for photographies manipulation or printing

With some interest in photographies manipulation and printing, I have a good camera with from which I do not get the full potential, fi5ban on mchat trigerred my decision to resolve the topic:
I am getting my 8 year old to use Porteus and he needs to download and print off some pictures for his 2nd grade presentation so what should he use?

I decided to dig the subject and try to find a simple solution for the 8 year old. Is there a simple answer?

1.0 Available programs on porteus (thru usm package manager):
1.1 Photoprint (just download and convert into module):
64bit:
https://packages.slackonly.com/pub/pack ... slonly.txz
Add library thru usm:

Code: Select all

usm -g netpbm
Some info on photoprint. It is easy to use. Just set the number per page photographs that you want and drop the photos from any folder on that page.

1.2 fotoxx (once built from source works on porteus, it will ask for additional packages ufraw and Image-ExifTool-9.45). It could be built from usm command line mode:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# usm sbo -b fotoxx
Some info on fotoxx:
http://www.kornelix.com/fotoxx.html
Comment on fotoxx:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions ... 175466504/
I recently started using Fotoxx for most of my processing. I also use gimp, photivo, rawtherappee and others as plugins from it. Fotoxx will do 99% of what is generally needed anyway but I often use ufraw 1st. Argyll offers very comprehensive colour calibration.
http://www.argyllcms.com/

1.3 Gimp is available for porteus, but at first glance it looks complicated. I have been doing a few simple things on and off with gimp. Maybe what is needed here are only good tutorials for the specific use of photograph manipulation and printing. They might not be as simple as expected, but here is what I found yet:
-print size in gimp:
http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-image-print-size.html
http://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-tutorial-q ... print.html
- gimp-print:
http://courses.linuxchix.org/mod/resour ... php?id=113
-quality print with gimp:
http://blog.worldlabel.com/2010/quality ... -gimp.html

2.0 Other linux packages for photograph manipulation and printing on linux:
2.1 A comparative list of their capabilities is available:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... ge_viewers

2.2 slackware based. The four following packages would be available thru the site of studioware. Studioware are slackware packages for photo, but also for audio and video:
http://docs.slackware.com/studioware:start
- darktable, citation:
Darktable
... comprises a subset of image editing operations specifically aimed at non-destructive raw photo post-production and is primarily focused on improving a photographer's workflow by facilitating the handling of large numbers of images.
.. comments and video on the use of darktable:
https://plus.google.com/communities/109 ... 62fd11702f
- digikam
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DigiKam
- rawstudio

2.3 other linux:
There is a gui for screens but printers need doing long hand. I used the gui to set the icc file system wide for sRGB but also had to manually load it into Photivo as it uses it's own.

-geeqie (this one is easy to build from source, no dependencies, it works fine on porteus and could be linked to gimp):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geeqie
-converseen:
http://fitzcarraldoblog.wordpress.com/2 ... agemagick/
- photivo.
http://photivo.org/manual/using_photivo
Comment on photivo, citation from french:
http://la-vache-libre.org/photivo-un-lo ... darktable/
Photivo allows among others to apply a lot of filters to your images and perform various corrections including noise reduction, contrast enhancement, saturation, colors, textures and light. You can also change the orientation of your images, import or export images from other apps such as Gimp and treat or convert pictures 8/16 bits.

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# usm -g photivo
root@porteus:~# usm -g lensfun
(updated as of 20180804)
Argyll offers very comprehensive colour calibrationhttp://www.argyllcms.com/
3.0 Utilities for photography.
3.1 ufraw to convert arw (raw photography) into other file format.

4.0 porteus-arch hybrid:
http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=114&t=2386
Under stifiling's porteus-arch hybrid, it seems that all of the linux packages for manipulation photos work out of the box once installed.

5.0 Comments on using photography packages under linux:
- a german review of seven video interface (use translation to get it in english):
http://www.linux-community.de/Internal/ ... -Vergleich
-studioware are slackware packages for photo, audio and video:
http://docs.slackware.com/studioware:start
- different tools used to manipulate photographs, citation:

Note: If you have already built up some photograph manipulation and printing program for porteus or slackware, please let us access to your modules or packages. Comments on the use of these programs would be also much valuable. If you have some good tutorials that simplify the use of these software, you are really welcome.

Good question. I'm told the digital natives (kids born into a digital world) have a skill for programs. Gimp would probably be a little difficult, but when you know nothing different you don't know what difficult means.

Picassa may be an option and I remember having this run on Linuxsome time ago. It is good for basic editing, uploading and printing. I remember it being not as intuitive as I thought to use, but a great degree simpler than some others.

I have build fotoxx on 32 bit architecture. It works. A few packages were missing but the program would work and ask for it: ufraw and Image-ExifTool-9.45. I could post the modules on mediafire.

I have revamped the first post for clarity.

Here is the answer fo the 8 year old of fi5ban. Photoprint (just download and convert into module):
32bit: http://www.studioware.org/files/package ... 86-3se.txz
64bit: http://www.studioware.org/files/package ... 64-3se.txz

You will need the following library to get photoprint going under porteus which is available thru usm:
- netpbm

Photoprint is easy to use. Just set the number per page photographs that you want and drop the photos from any folder on that page.

rawtherapee photo editor

- review:
https://johnwiddall.wordpress.com/2014/ ... processor/
I currently see RawTherapee and Darktable as very close competitors. Whilst one might have the advantage in one area it is often balanced by the other being preferred for other reasons... ... So, I shall be using both of these applications and keeping an eye on Photivo.

- installation:

Code: Select all

usm -g rawtherapee

You still running Porteus4.0? fotoxx doesn't seem to be available in Porteus5.0.

Code: Select all

guest@porteus:~$ getmod -s fotoxx
Enter root's password

I will be doing the same thing than I did with the thread on gslapt.

But fotoxx is a good catch. Digikam is still living. Photoprint seems to be dead.
