I read about it from hackers. How did you built your 3D printer?

I did it from scratch, I am documenting it at rafaelalcocer.com I purchased the Rods, lenear bearings, the electronics from Ebay, I also made Porteus modules for the AVR and Arduino tool chain, I am now waiting for the motor control boards.

In case anybody is interested I made the modules necessary for 3D printing like Skeinforge, Printrun, RepetierHost, Blender, Slic3r. Replicatorg, Reprap, and Arduino-1.0.5.

Thanks for posting. That's a real inspiration and something very tempting for me. How expensive is the process if you don't mind me asking? I love this kind of forward thinking. I imagine the day when inventors can custom build prototypes in the living room.
How do i become super user?

The cost depends on your stockpile of junk , the electronics, I found great deals from china, the extruder I had to purchase but for about $300.00 you can build your own, I am documentin my build in http://rafaelalcocer.com, I just read that Fedora and Windows 8.1 will be supporting 3D printing out of the box.

This feature would really be a big seller for porteus. :twisted:

@ralcocer
Last year we had a dissertation at Universidad Nacional Pedro Henríquez Ureña in Santo Domingo by a representative of a commercial maker of a 3d-printer. The idea was to sell one of those models to the uni (they offered 3 models, different sizes, for prohibitive prices).

The people in the School of Architecture were especially interested, but I haven't followed up that matter. Anyway, I will pass this info to the right people here and there; I guess somebody will be interested in building a replica of your device...

Regards!

As soon as I get some people interested, I will let you know. I guess you speak Spanish, to make things more easy. :)
Porteus is proud of the FASTEST KDE ever made.....(take akonadi, nepomuk and soprano out and you will have a decent OS).
The Porteus Community never sleeps!

The best partabout building your own printer is the the second one can replicate and even make changes, so the biggest hurdle is gettin the original parts, in Santo Domingo like Puerto Rico is sometimes very hard to get parts, but it can be done, my biggest problem was waiting for the Boards and then getting the software to work with linux.
