[SLAX FAQ] FIND YOUR ANSWERS HERE!

Thanks francois.e

FAQs for SLAX 2009-2010

1) Is there a FAQ section for Slax (Mocabilly's suggestion)?

There is none on this official forum, but there is one on another site related to slax for those who really want to make one:
http://66.246.76.162/slax/wiki/FAQ

Consider this thread as a genuinely good attempt at building a FAQ section.

2) Where can I find essential information about Slax (Tonio's suggestion)?

The essential information about Slax could be found under the Slax Read manual topic:
http://www.slax.org/documentation.php

There is also the "incontournable" Captain Picard's thread titled Some usefull Slax-related links / Guide:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=vi ... ntID=23220

And also Fundamental's Slax wiki: http://66.246.76.162/slax/wiki/FAQ

3) What would be an efficient way to ask questions on a Slax or Linux forum (CaptainPicard's suggestion)?

Strictly speaking you should have a look at the following thread on How To Ask Questions The Smart Way:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html

However, on the Slax forum there are a lot of nice people, so try but don't be so nervous about the hacker's way.

4) How do I install Slax and what type of configuration should I choose? (Tonio, Cichlasoma and Francois)

Slax can be installed on different media like: cd-rom, USB, hard disk and sd card.
Although Slax was designed with use on CD/USB in mind, it can be used on HDD just as well.

Slax can be installed by:
# burning the Slax iso file to CD-rom/DVD
# unpacking the slax tar file to USB medium/hard disk and run
one of the the slax install scripts. (bootinst.bat or bootinst.sh or liloinst.sh)
# using an "installer" like unetbootin ( http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net )

Slax can be installed as sole operating system, as well as "dual-boot" besides
an other operating system.

5) Which is the easiest way to install Slax?
(Tonio and Francois)

This depends on a couple things:
# the boot medium you want to use
# if you want to alter Slax once it is installed
# if you want to boot more operating systems from the same medium

For example:
# You are happy with Slax as it is provided in the iso file,
then you only have to burn the iso file to cd-rom.
# If you want to make changes to Slax after it is installed, you only have to
extract the Slax tar file to an USB medium and run one of the install scripts.
# Your computer only has only "USB 1" (slow reading/writing to USB media)
or doesn't support booting from USB media, booting Slax from CD-rom is no option
for you and you still want to use your installed windows, then the easiest way to
install slax is to use an installer like Unetbootin.
http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net

6) What is a partition?
(Francois)

A partition is a segment of a hard disk.

7) What is a file system?
(Mocabilly)

The way files are stored in partitions on your hard disk, is arranged by
the file system you use.
If you want, you can choose a different file system for every partition on your hard disk.
Examples of file systems are FAT, NTFS, EXT3 XFS, reiserFS

Most common used filesystems at this time are NTFS for Windows operating systems and
EXT3 for Linux operating systems.

An important note, your operating system will only be able to read from a file system
if it supports that file system.
For instance, Windows operating systems, can not read files from file systems like EXT3.
(Not unless you install a EXT3 driver.)

8) What is a module?
(Francois)

A module is a compressed program, like for instance Firefox.
Extra device drivers are also packed in modules.
Modules for Slax have the ".lzm" filename extention.

There are hundreds of modules available for Slax, you can find them in the modules pages:
http://www.slax.org/modules.php

If you want to know more about modules, take a look at:
http://www.slax.org/documentation_create_modules.php

9) What is a command line interface. (CLI)?
(Mocabilly)
It's a program that will allow you to controll your computer/server by typing commands
instead of clicking on windows and icons.

There are two sorts of CLI:
# CLI in "text-modus" (any without graphics, only text)
# CLI in "graphical modus"

10) How do I get into command mode, also called CLI (Command Line Interface)
or in Konsole (Graphical Command Line Interface)?
(Cichlasoma)

In the KDE environment you are in graphic mode.
At bottom left of your display in the KDE taskbar, there is a small black box.
By double-clicking it you start Konsele, a graphical command line program.

If you want to use a CLI in "text-modus" hold "ctrl + alt" down and press F2
Any F-key from F1 till F6 will do.
You can switch back to your graphic mode (KDE) by holding down "ctrl + alt" and pressing "F7"

It's very easy to get a lot of useful system information by using a few simple commands.
For example, try the "lspci" command, which will list detailed information about your
hardware components, the "poweroff" command will immediately shut your computer down.

11) I am on dialup, is my modem supported under Linux/Slax?
(Tonio)

To get your dialup modem online:
# Download the scanModem.gz tool from the LinModems Resource Page:
http://132.68.73.235/linmodems/packages/scanModem.gz
# Read the manual "first.html" on:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/first.html
# Execute these commands in the command line.
# unpack the downloaded "scanModem.gz" file
# gunzip scanModem.gz
# make the scanModem file executable executable
# chmod +x scanModem
# execute the "scanModem" file
# ./scanModem

Now you should have a folder "/Modem" which contains the file "ModemData.txt" and some files.
Send the "ModemData.txt" file to the linmodems group or to me, Tonio. I will try to help.

If your modem is supported I will try to make a module for you in case that it does not exist.
If it is a "hsf/hcf" modem, I will recommend the_greek's modules :)
Otherwise you need a complicated driver that is not yet build for slax.
Users are recommended to read the "InfoGeneral.txt" file in the "/Modem" folder.

For more information about dialup modems, take a look at the following page(s):
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/
http://modemhelplinux.741.com/

There are also several pages at the Slax forum:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=vi ... ight=Modem
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=vi ... ight=Modem
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=vi ... ight=Modem
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=vi ... ight=Modem

12) How do I activate modules?
(Some-guy)

Double-click on them or run 'activate module.lzm'

13) Where is the ftp server?
(Some-guy)

ftp://ftp.slax.org/SLAX-6.x

14) Is there a package management system?
(Some-guy)

There is the Slax module manager and an unofficial apt-get like one as well http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=view&parentID=329

15) How do I know if my question has already been answered?
(Some-guy)

Use the search function of the forum http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=search

16) How do I make a module in slax?
(Some-guy)

If it is a slackware tgz, run 'tgz2lzm [pkgname]'

If it is a source, run
configure-for-slax or
export CFLAGS="-O3 -march=i486 -mtune=i686"
./autogen.sh --prefix=/usr --build=i486-Slackware-linux (if it is from git/svn/bzr/etc)
make
mkdir /tmp/fakeroot
make install DESTDIR=/tmp/fakeroot
if it follows that, but if it is wriiten in python do
python setup.py build
mkdir /tmp/fakeroot
mkdir/tmp/fakeroot/usr
python setup.py install --prefix=/tmp/fakeroot/usr

cd /tmp/fakeroot
find ./ -type d | xargs chmod -v 755 (if errors pop up for these, it's alright)
find . | grep .gz | xargs gunzip
find . | xargs file | grep ELF | cut -f 1 -d : | xargs strip --strip-unneeded
cd /tmp
dir2lzm fakeroot [pkgname].lzm

17) How do I add a user?
(Some-guy)

Run 'adduser', when it asks for groups, leave the first one as users, and make the second one audio, video

My page referenced above is down :(, don't know what is wrong. Contact me via email and/or here, and I can see how I can help with dialup issues.

*Note for conexant based modems, linuxant issues free 14K limited drivers, this is a difficult thing, only if you have DELL computer you can get/may get free drivers.
*some modems are not supported. Some buildscripts exist and only need to be converted to sq4, new remix version :)

@karis:

This link seems to be dead in 2): And also Fundamental's Slax wiki: http://66.246.76.162/slax/wiki/FAQ

This is a real good idea to bring back old stuff. Do you intend to update it and to add additional FAQs? Also, it would be nice to make some place to Captain Picard's post somewhere:
http://www.slax.org/forum.php?action=vi ... ntID=23220

@karis:

It seems to me that it would be a very good thing that we add some FAQ for the Slax module center of bonaparte, and that we document the use of slackyd provided by beny (however, the only info I found where in italian), I would also like that some of us come up with some discussion on different package managers, mainly slapt-get (my favorite one), and the other package facilities included in remix. There is not enough instructions as to howto for these precious tools. We could also explain the vocabulary of fanthom sns-tool.

Qu'en pense-tu, le gars du nord-ouest de la France?
