If you are not satisfied with your search utility, there is always google desktop that was developped by google, which will once it has indexed all the files on your computer, find files in a second. There is a reason for thatGoogle Desktop is a version of Google’s powerful indexing and search system on your desktop .Really its fast, even faster than booting into porteus. Which is not the least. :D

I am trying to get google desktop running on porteus 2.0 xfce 64bit. It seems that the program is working but that some fonts are missing or something like that. :( I get a series of small boxes instead of the usual characters. Do you have any suggestion, before I try to build it from source?

However, for those using it under 32bit it works completely fine. :)

Here is the slackware file for 32 bit, if you mind having a look at it:
http://ftp.arm.slackware.com/slacky/sla ... 86-1as.tgz

If you are on 64 bit, you will need compat files for 64 bit to run the package:
http://ponce.cc/porteus/x86_64/current/ ... 64-1sl.xzm

Some useful reviews on google desktop:

Google desktop install itself in /opt/google/desktop/

To start google desktop command line:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:~# gdlinux

I noticed you are using the slackware package from an arm repository. Also remember that google-desktop was discontinued by google 2 years ago.

Lastly, I don't think this is a font issue since I synced the entire google fonts directory into linux and it made no difference to the little boxes.

Code: Select all

git clone git://github.com/w0ng/googlefontdirectory.git
Compiling from source gave no errors.

Hello Jay, thanks for your comments. :)

I found:
http://slackware.org.uk/slacky/slackwar ... .2.0.0088/

which is not arm. However same crap, except that using some of the available small boxes unreadable stuff, I am able to open a window into the browser for google desktop which is fully functional. I will work this way, until I get other suggestions or find the bug. 8)

Google desktop is indexing the files on my computer.

I had the same problem with google-earth; the cause was missing fonts in 002-xorg. Search the forum for the solution...(you need 4 folders in /usr/sahre/fonts: 75dpi, cyrillic, misc and TFF. That did the trick.

Thanks Wread. That was my first thought (the google earth fonts) but I thought i had included them in Mate. Seems I only included them in the Razor desktop and forgot to transfer them into the Mate tree too. I'm glad this came up. Francois, although I didn't test this I am certain it will be the cause. I now wonder why they don't include them in the google fonts collection.

Thanks wread. :D

It seems to be the cyrillic fonts. I will try that. Your post is:

Cyrillic fonts no arch could be fetched at:
http://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slackw ... arch-1.txz

However, it does not work. I will try the precise package you used:
http://slackware.cs.utah.edu/pub/slackw ... arch-1.txz

Curious google-desktop will work only with porteus 2.0, xfce for now. :o . However there is still these little boxes, even with wreads' patch (though it is for 2.1).
