Re: Porteus linux on the net or on the waves of the web
Good for us. This is a completely positive review.
However, if you look at their top ten best distros, they all revolve around deb and rpm packages. No place for arch linux at all, Manjaro for example.

Looking at reviews and porteus more in depth I found another one:
Linux Running From 8 GB USB Stick – 4 Versions Reviewed:
http://gamejonez.net/2015/02/linux-runn ... -reviewed/
Overall the review is very positive. The cons being the following.
Unfortunately the experience after that was not ideal only because Porteus is aimed at those with a little more Linux experience. If you are not somewhat familiar with command lines installations, then getting software working in Porteus is a bit more intimidating than in Tails or Mint 17.1.

- these few who can make things happen,
- those (some more) who can help making things to happen, and
- the rest (many many) who think things just happen....
We are willing to have the Porteus Community inside the first two categories!
Cheers!

Re: Porteus linux on the net or on the waves of the web
Indeed, could be seen as that. But folks, remember, compared to slackware with zero, nada, nix package dependency check or help, Porteus with some packages including deps, or with usm is so much more user-friendly than just the Winston Churchill class one and upper third or forth of class 2...Bogomips wrote:^ Could be accused of elitism. Here the full quote from the above linked Porteus review:
This in itself is too long for putting it on wikipedia. Any suggestions of cutting it down into maybe half size (or less) for me to put on our wikipedia article?http://www.techradar.com/news/software/ ... os-1295034
This Slackware-based distro is designed for installation on removable media like USB sticks or CDs, but can just as easily be installed to a hard disk. The distro is incredibly fast as it runs from system RAM.
The unique selling point of Porteus is that it exists in a compressed state and creates the file system on the fly. Besides the pre-installed apps, all additional software for the distro comes in the form of modules, and the modular nature of Porteus makes it small and compact.
Available for 32-bit and 64-bit machines, the distro provides users the choice of KDE4, LXQt, MATE and XFCE when downloading the ISO image. When building a custom image, users can also choose to include drivers for Nvidia, AMD graphics cards, along with the browser and word processor of their choice, and so on. The distro also provides plenty of documentation to help users get the most out of Porteus.
Cheers!

Re: Porteus linux on the net or on the waves of the web
Next issue, reading parts of the wikipedia entry, it is quite outdated:
While in the very next paragraph it says
(Dunno who wrote all that, if was me, I have done not the best of jobs on our article...) If someone else wrote that: Please keep up the good work, and we should work together more closely... 8)
I try to look into the changes log of the page, hopefully I can see who make these two entries. But a wikipedia user name not tells me if the user is on this forum as well, could be "only" a Porteus user without doing much on this forum cause most of his modules and system work flawlessly... 8)
_____________________________________
Speaking about that, it would be immensely helpful when where is a thread that lists all such info, like changes of the used desktop versions, like, one post for each (including older) Porteus versions, with the info in short in the article, and then links to the actual forum posts that provide the info in itself / the original info / news about the change or new addition.
That would not only make my work with our wikipedia entry much easier (and quicker to respond to changes) because of the need of [citation needed], but also folks who need to have older version of Port for older hardware have all info on one single place, and want to put mixed aged modules together with older base systems, cause they would have much needed data in one place.
Does that sound doable? Sadly, me not has currently the time to do so, but it not requires technical or coding skills, just some time and effort to browse the forum and collect all data, putting one post after the other, one post for each existing Port version (best split up into separate posts for x486 and x86-64 )
Your thoughts?
With 3.1 we have instead KDE4, MATE, Xfce and LXQT.Currently Porteus 3.0 is available in five desktop versions: LXDE, KDE4, Razor-qt,[2] MATE and Xfce.
While in the very next paragraph it says
obviously now referring to the current 3.1 version, but without saying so...The system is downloaded only after selecting various options from a menu including one of four windows management systems

Probably the best place to get info about each Porteus version is in the announcements section which should link to any further information when it is abbreviated.

Re: Porteus linux on the net or on the waves of the web
I don't need to abbreviate it, I just list the 4 GUIs for Port 3.1 and give as source the URL to the post n the announcements section.brokenman wrote:Probably the best place to get info about each Porteus version is in the announcements section which should link to any further information when it is abbreviated.
When someone wants to research if my quote is indeed a valid [citation needed] then he will realize that, yes, indeed the given resource backs that up. Case closed.

Re: Porteus linux on the net or on the waves of the web
Nice one, he speaks of frugal installs like Porteus, but the only one he then explicitly names and includes in the grub setup is Porteus, and only Porteus.francois wrote:porteus hdd install under grub 2:

Me thinks that this counts as "see also" / additional info/URLs for our wikipedia entry...

Quite low on distrowatch ratings around 95th rank. Let's see what porteus 3.2 will have as impact. 8)

Re: Porteus linux on the net or on the waves of the web
I know, I am late, but browsing our original Porteus wikipedia entry (the English one), realized we also have Čeština, Français, Norsk bokmål, Русский and Українська.
Or in English: Czech, French, Norwegian, Russian and Ukrainian.
Does anyone know who the maintainers are of these language versions? Cause we could work together to keep all versions as recent and with a similar amount of info.
