Porteus linux on the net or on the waves of the web
In an email to someone I linked to the wikipedia:GraphicsMagick article as well, cause I wrote a script converting digital photos into smaller versions for sending via email, and since I was quite sure the addressee had no idea what GraphicsMagick is. (Addressee is a sufferer from a Severe case of SM-Witless-Useritis )
Then I looked a bit on that wikipedia entry, went to wikipedia:Fork (software development (you know how it sometimes goes when you are on the intertubes) and from there sure looked at the first prominently displayed image, "A timeline chart of how Linux distributions have forked": https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/ ... meline.svg
And sure, Porteus is also part of that timeline chart.
(SCNR the emotes)

a bit not accurate though, porteus should branch off slax(which itself should show a rightangle turn into debian territory recently)

IKR. I did not want to say so since I wanted someone else to spot that inaccuracy.ncmprhnsbl wrote: ↑01 Apr 2019, 09:19a bit not accurate though, porteus should branch off slax(which itself should show a rightangle turn into debian territory recently)
Maybe contact the ones who made it and tell them about it?
Or… do we just not care about that detail?
Cheers!

Porteus 5.0 rc1 based on slackware current seems to be quite attracting distrowatch ranking going up at 15th https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=popularity.

Articles on german have not been mentioned here.
There are also many articles in German:
https://www.linux-community.de/ausgaben ... einsetzen/
https://alltagshelfer.wordpress.com/201 ... eus-linux/
Here are three very positive (!)reviews:
https://xn--apfelbck-s4a.de/surfsystem- ... nd-sicher/
https://www.computerwoche.de/a/die-best ... ,3063507,2
https://www.pcwelt.de/ratgeber/Porteus- ... 13896.html
The magazine LinuxWelt always contains a DVD with software.
Porteus (language german) is often present, e.g. in 2/2019, 3/2019, 5/2019, 3/2020. Name: "Porteus 4.0 LinuxWelt-Edition" or. "LinuxWelt Surfsystem"
A description of this (on pages 14 to 18):
https://www.itmediapublishing.de/wp-con ... uxwelt.pdf
An ISO can be downloaded here:
https://www.myria.de/sdm_downloads/linuxwelt-surfsystem
The current issue of the magazine contains a multi-boot DVD with Manjaro, Ubuntu, ... and LinuxWelt-Surfsystem
The surfing system is completely in German and is based now on Porteus 5.0rc1 (ArchLinux x86_64, Kernel 5.5.0-porteus, desktop MATE)
I've tried it.
WiFi has been detected and the wireless network connection is active after entering the password.
But then:
When using the browser: Error message "couldn't connect to server"
What can that be??
Does anyone have an idea?

The contents of the LinuxWelt ISO seems to be more than a year old.
Over here the ISO boots OK under VirtualBox and accesses the internet without problems.
And over here the USB stick I dd'ed the ISO to fails to boot in MBR as well as EFI mode.

Hi burdi01,
the ISO is very old (based on Porteus 4.0, 32 bit), and it works!
But the current version (issue 5/2020) is based now on Porteus 5.0rc1
and this has the strange mistake that I can't explain to myself.

I am not sure how to get that issue over here.
So, if you want to pursue things, provide me with that ISO.

Time to join new porteus ver 5.0 release candidate 2. Porteus is like a good wine, it gets better and tastier with age. It deserves the interest of the linux community.
From distrowatch satisfaction ratings and comments, the satisfaction level is quite high given the size of the development team and of the community.

Porteus deserves a KISS.

(He gave 4 out of 10 and calls Porteus "great", Le Sigh ¹¹ )I am using an Acer Aspire 4732z from 2009 with 1GB RAM and I can't install KDE into my 64GB sd card, which I wanted to make a portable OS. LXDE works fine but I don't like the blue corners of the UI. This distro kinda gives me a headache to install and is not recommended for those who wanted to move from windows to linux. There's even a graphical glitch in the KDE version of Porteus.
I'll wait for another year to reinstall this OS back. Hope they'll improve it someday even more.
I wonder, why is that person not making a free (as in speech and beer) account on the forum and gives us the details so that we can approve.
Many laptops use self-brewed hardware and the company gives SM-Windowser all the info they need, and Linux has to figure out all by ourselves.
It is noit the fault from Linux when a hardware resource claims it can "manage XY at a spd of 80 Whatver" when it only manages that resource at 40 at best. Windows ahem I meant SM-Windowser knows about that and addresses that hardware part as if it only can be bothered with a speed of 40, even when the resource itself claims it can handle double the speed.
This has been like so for ages, and it seems many SM-Windowser user willing to use Linux on older hardware still have not got the memo.
People, we ned detailed bug reports to improve Porteus.
Cheers!

People that do not take the time to get to know porteus have that type of comments. They look for the ubuntu experience.
Read the other comments, and you will get hyper. We have great respect amongst the community.
