Hi from The English South West

Joined to ask a bunch of "before I do this" questions having only ever used Windows, Linux Mint and dabbled with Fatdog 64.

I am mostly a one trick pony (Boinc) but interested in this idea of "in ram" computing on 771,1366 and socket R era servers that usually have 1GB ram per core/thread

I guess the overall question is: How tough will it be for this old guy to get his head around Porteus

Welcome to porteus oldchap. :worship:

With fatdog and mint, you should be in business almost right away. There a few peculiarities to porteus, you should catch them fast. The package manager USM is one of them. We hope you will appreciate this distribution. A review will be appreciated.

Hi guys, I'm new here and I wanted to say a big THANKS to the team for developing this distro. It makes my work a lot easier and is just perfect for my needs. Here is a little background of why I started using Porteus and why it's an awesome distro.

I've used several flavours of UNIX clones including Debian, Slackware, Gentoo (my favourite), FreeBSD, Mint, Ubuntu & SLES. I have some interest in security and there was something that was bothering me, drive-by download Malware. From what I've understood, these are browser based malware that gets activated merely by visiting a website (those goddam web scripts). Linux's DAC would stop most types of malware, but since this runs on a browser which is cross-platform, there is a good chance that even these OSes are vulnerable. The malware doesn't have to own the whole OS to cause damage, just infecting the user's browser should be good enough.

IMO, the best way to tackle this threat is a live OS. There are many Linux livecds available but for regular use, you also need to be able to save some config like passwords, wifi keys etc. Initially I thought of making a custom Slackware iso but then I ran into Porteus and here I am :)

Sometimes, you feel happy watching videos like this. Mainland connected to an Island few kilometres away by road and rail. The rail line has been provided with cantilever supported two arms Bridge , which can be lifted, to allow taller Sea cargo vessels to pass.
