just hi @all :D
I'm "longtime" Slackware user (jumped the wagon around 10.1) and was seeking a lightweight OS for best productivity on "anemic" hardware
so far:
1. Found NorhTech Gecko EduBook (runs on 8x AA cels "netbook" class thingy)
2. Found Slax (right thing/right way ratio champion IMHO, but: development fallen to coma... )
hope this is a safe haven I can rest a while? :)
Will help as I can...

Best regards,
Stevan C.

welcome cest73.

Your slack background should mean you will be comfortable here. You've arrived just before the official V1 release!

Kind thanks brokenman, for the warm welcome, :good:
Well I'm so background that I keep getting pounces :sorry: all over the place here for my outcry for i586 support
and I'm so comfortable with Slackware it (Slackware, not the pounces  ) hurts (...by now  )
:Yahoo!:
Just kidding, I'm glad to be here and will try to help as time permits :D

My goals:
A. i586 kernel at a image (even I had to "walk it" "by foot" :o )
B. i586 packages with Oracle's instead of "K" office
C. Inkscape+blender+wine compound package
D. lots more of lots of other packages ....

Best regards
Stevan C.

I've recompiled the kernel with i486/586 support (for 32bit ...thanks fanthom). Not so sure this will solve i686 without cmov but we will see how it goes. Oracle is a very comprehensive suite with great development, even offering kernel patches. You can remove koffice by removing the 006-koffice.xzm module from the base folder, or use the noload=koffice boot time cheat code.

Looks like your goals are certainly attainable. I'll be watching for your compound package, although i don't think including wine is the best idea (for public consumption) as many users already have it. Best of luck.

Just moved over from OpenOffice to LibreOffice on my Ubuntu 10.04 VMs

One thing that the Open Doc Foundation did was use their new found freedom
to fix stuff lingering for ages in the OpenOffice "buglist"

Not had any problems with it so far. Just need to remember that Linux
is (more) fussy about the java environment.

If you want to play with this yourself before putting a lot of work into
your Office environment on a host install, and use Ubuntu 10.04LTS
yourself let me know. I can ease the process of changing over.

LibreOffice 3.3.2 from the ppa repository merged nicely, with just
a few dependancy issues that forced me to do it in three stages.

Kind thanks jcuk!
in Slackware one just goes to Slackbuilds.org and brews whatever is needed "by hand" if not already present:

-I can compile my "own" i486 packages if i can't find an already existing package
-I can fix a existing buildscript if it fails to "just do it" on a more recent release than it was made for (rarely the case)
-Or I just compile "by hand" without any build script and let it just run (on my home station for example).

But it is nice to know there is someone who could give a hand if something goes nasty ;), as it did, on occasion, with the colossal office suite...

Best regards,
Stevan C.

Hello I'm here.
I can hardly wait for stable issue of Porteus. I will enjoy this trip. Oh, it is a trip. This is pretty trippy.
My data is where I want it.
My little porteus OS is where I can keep it. In my pocket.
Interesting learning to get this up and running and anticipating it's quirks. :wall:
If I could articulate myself better, I would.
Keep it up. This little OS is very elegant, tidy, tiny, powerful and portable.
I have it as my primary OS on my desktop PC. Yep.*
No, really!
* Mint was in the partition, but I cleaned it out and only left the root fs or something like that. Porteus now owns the box
Peace.
