Maybe you got confused by Slax. There are two branches of that, one based on Debian, and the other (more recent) which is based on Slackware v15. Porteus and Slax (ie. Slackware-based) do have some similarities.

Hello everyone, I have loved personal computing since I was a child. Started on Radio Shack TRS-80 (later Tandy) Color Computer 2, then steadily moved up to Tandy 1000 with MS-DOS, to a computer with VGA graphics, then Windows98, WindowsXP 32-bit, Windows7 64-bit and... my first Linux distro which came on the coverdisc of Computer Music Magazine, an early version of Ubuntu. A bit later I was able to download Debian Wheezy and Ubuntu Studio "Precise Pangolin" both 32-bit; was stuck with those two after my computer's HDD crashed and was forced to boot from external USB drives. The whole computer became unusable five years back.

Six months ago I regained Internet access which allowed me to get away from the Windows yoke again. I've been distro-hopping. My first experience with anything related to Slackware was the Puppy based on it. Didn't like it, especially ROX file manager. I'm using a laptop with a very slow HDD which means I could have only one OS besides Windows. Desired it to be Slackware but failed in two attempts. So it's a good thing I discovered Porteus, not just as a compromise. Finally I found a distro that I could recommend!

Long live the Slack! Getting closer to 30th anniversary like no other!

Greetings everyone - just checking in to say, "Hi".

I saw, on the linux.org forum, yet another mention of Porteus as a "lighter distro" and thought "Oh, why not?" so here I am, back to being an utter noob.

I haven't been much of distro hopper since landing on Tiny Core several years ago and have never tried a slackware based distro nor ever tried out the Mate desktop, so I'm killing two birds with one stone by learning both Porteus and Mate. I grabbed Porteus-MATE-v5.0-i586.iso, mounted it to get the kernel and initrd for booting and set up grub.cfg entries more or less like the isolinux setup from the iso. It would have booted cleanly the first try B) ... except I forgot to copy out the /porteus directory to my USB stick from the iso :( . It booted cleanly the second try and didn't wreck my Tiny Core installation so I'll call that a win.

I really like the look of Porteus 5.0. I'll have to spend some time with it and learn the package manager (usm?) before I can really be comfortable with it. I don't expect to ever make it my "daily driver" - but that's not really the point - it's fun.

USM is no longer available in port 5 - but we have an alternative - getmod. [Porteus 5.0's USM replacement] getmod: A wrapper for slapt-get to build modules
HTH :)

Thanks for the advice and link. I can imagine that having been a stumbling block. :)

I've set aside my Porteus adventure for the moment in favor of moving on with a project that I've been putting off for way too long: going through a box of old hard disks to recover any useful data (primarily pictures from when my kids were still kids) so I can A) index and backup the data, B) recover those really cool magnets from those old disk drives and C) finally retire that ancient PC that still has the 40 pin ATA ribbon cable connectors.

B) is totally worth it :celebrate3: (I have no children of my own) :D

After having tried to log in & given up a few months back, I discovered 5.01 release, & thought I'd give it another try - had same trouble this time around - but by posting on Linux Question, got help from TurboBlaze, & after some more login problems, I'm finally here - so thankyou TurboBlaze.

A little bit about me, I went full time Linux back in 1999, my first distro was ZipSlack8, tried many distros, ended up happily on Debian, until the systemd debacle, when I switched over to Devuan, my main Linux distro.

Always ready to try out 'live' distros, I came across Porteus, & find it a very good distro, so will be keeping it on a couple of pendrives.
Uses old computers with FOSS.
