XFCE system load memory usage

Post#1 by mailmegx » 14 Nov 2012, 19:05

Hi All

Im using Poertus 1.2 XFCE version and I have the system load tray icon to show cpu and memory, today I noticed the command /usr/libexec/xfce4/panel-plugins/xfce4-systemload-plugin was using 600mb, so I removed it and added it again it dropped to 3mb usage, does anyone else experience similar bloating?

I've not seen this, but I don't typically have that plugin running. Please keep an eye on it and if you see it spike again, let me know, and give any details you can on how to recreate it. I'll post a bug report on the xfce bugzilla if we can verify it.

On a related note, I was playing around with volumeicon this morning (working on adding it for Porteus-Xfce 2.0), and I saw it using 100% of one of my cpu's. Everything went back to normal after a reboot, so I'm chalking it up to the fact that I tried to force rmmod snd_hda_intel, which volumeicon relies upon... :D

Thanks Ahau

This morning its upto 22 mb so its a slow process.

All I do is add "System load" plugin to my task bar, right click -> properties, cpu tab uncheck "text to display" change color to green, memory tab uncheck "text to display" change color to blue, swap tab uncheck "show monitor", uptime tab uncheck "show monitor". (I dont thing the settings play any role but thats how I run it)

Overnight it rose from 3mb to 30mb, since I never reboot every night I suspend and in the morning resume I currently have an uptime of 11 days so it will take about to days to get to 600mb I assume which is a little consistent with 30mb in 12 hrs..

According to the project page 1.0.0 fixes a memory leak 1.1.0 and 1.1.1 do not mention anything about memory
http://goodies.xfce.org/projects/panel- ... oad-plugin

Thanks for your help

Just to make sure, let's bump to the latest stable (1.1.1). Download here:

32 bit: http://porteus-xfce.googlecode.com/file ... -1Ahau.xzm
64 bit: http://porteus-xfce.googlecode.com/file ... -1Ahau.xzm

Get the right one for your architecture and place in /porteus/modules.

If the memleak is still occurring here, I'll test as well (hard for me since I never have long uptimes), and submit a bug report upstream.

Thanks!!!

No problem :) I would have posted both arch's anyway, so anyone else experiencing this issue could upgrade if they were reading this thread but didn't post about it.

That said, you can fill out your distro details with the new custom profile field (in the forum's user control panel), as mentioned here: http://forum.porteus.org/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=1659

Thanks again!

Thanks Ahau

Well its still at 32mb so it must have been a freak circumstances that caused memory bloat.

ok so is this hogging memory or not?

bash-4.1$ ps aux | grep systemload
gx 9034 0.3 5.4 308288 182228 ? S Nov22 5:25 /usr/libexec/xfce4/panel-plugins/xfce4-systemload-plugin 6 33554464 systemload System Load Monitor Monitor CPU load, swap usage and memory footprint

htop reports it as 301M VIRT and 178 RES

does that mean its hogging 300mb ram?

btw its still running previous version
/var/log/packages/xfce4-systemload-plugin-1.0.0-x86_64-1Ahau

Ill have to load new version and test with that

I think the 178MB number is closer to the amount it is actually hogging, the VIRT number includes shared memory. In either case, that's WAY too much RAM for a process as simple as this plugin. Hopefully you'll have better luck with the new version; if not, we'll hunt this down like the dog it is :D
