slackware 14 is out

Post#1 by mailmegx » 01 Oct 2012, 04:31

Hi All

Slackware 14 is out and I see no posts mentioning it, there were some when one of the rc got released and some modules made but things have been really quite here lately is everyone too busy? What are the plans for the next version of porteus?

Porteus "2" should be based on Slackware 14

What are the plans for the next version of porteus?
next porteus version will be 2.0 based on slackware-14.0 (plus some updated packages - as usual).
currently we are busy with our specialized editions and work on standard porteus releases is frozen.

beta of porteus kiosk will be released in next couple of days. after receiving some feedback we jump straight to kiosk final.
in the main time will be working on second specialized edition.
can't tell you it's name and purpose right now but i believe it will be a blast (personally i think it may be more popular than our standard editions)

we really want to make specialized editions the best quality possible so first rc's of standard edition may be delayed to November.
hopefully final of porteus-2.0 standard will be ready for January (to preserve our 6 months development cycle) but can't promise that right now.

Tomas M is doing great job in improving Slax so please follow his blog:
http://www.tomas-m.com/blog/
as some features may land also in Porteus.
(for sure we will have initramfs instead of initrd in next release).

Cheers

Don't let that stop Porteus. Keep on modifying and making life easier for the rest of us. Use Tomas' new versions and just add ur wallpapers and fixes. Works excellent for me ! :) Frugal install is a great example of a ++ porteus and a repetitive no-no from Tomas despite being the prefered installation of many

hello Thor,

nice to see you again :)
Use Tomas' new versions and just add ur wallpapers and fixes.
i doubt that slax-7 will be a base for porteus-2.0 as we have achieved our independent line some time ago: new linuxrc (no liblinuxlive here), activation scripts, package management, installer, various gtk tools, etc...
i can't imagine rewriting of nearly everything to fit slax...

competition is always good in opensource world and the winners are the users who can choose a better product.

will stay independent so

Even better !! Very nice improvements and good additions. Great effort in keeping size down. Your distro feel a little like coming home :) Dammit guys.. I have skipped my daily bicycle trip 2 days in a row now playing around in linux . No good for an old man :D

These new options like the one I just stumbled upon after I gathered my ancient old mp3 players from the basement..."Save changes to encrypted image file asking for password during boot" and more..seems somehow familiar. Must have a been some paranoid (or maybe too rich for a divorce) fakker taking the effort of changing the ramdisk and scripts to hide his porn site visits from his wife :P

A careful note, being sort of clueless without having read the feedback threads... Porteus 64 1.2 had no 'asound.conf'. Todays hardware is great with many features.. so I had to redirect sound card and dev to get sound from web browser flash player. That took a while, since I had forgotten quite some stuff. Despite the fact I knew it was supposed to be very easy :) Those media issues are so important today so it would have saved me a little time to see a notice and/or how-to/troubleshooting on the live-desktop.

I have Slackware 14 as I have run Slackware-current and applying updates. Porteus has newer kernels but still many things were a bit older.

I see Tomas from Slax working hard to make things good. I see fanthom, Ahau, brokenman and others working hard here too!

Good to see Thor back. Remember him from old slax days. Both porteus and slax are great. Porteus has kept up with many new technologies and Slax is roaring back from a dormant time where Porteus fitted very nicely. I see new technologies making their way here. What I would like to see is a kit(linux live like Tomas' ) to build a livecd/livedvd from a Slackware install or any other linux for that matter. He(Tomas) has a new kit and there are other ways. Otherwise, I will have to see how I can keep up with new kertex releases and make modules. I am having hard time with buildscript for porteus, have to manually type some commands. But if I run out of ideas, I will ask for help. I have been kind of busy and apologize for not visiting often. Keep working hard and thanks for all that you do!

@Thor - Good to see you 'old' man! ;)

@fanthom - its been a long time. Wanted to check if Porteus has a set of live scripts to create a distro? Or are you using Tomas' old linux live scripts modified. I'm considering using porteus as a base for my upgraded distro (like I used slax as base the first couple of times for it), but I can't find anything about how porteus is made.

I know its probably taboo, but has anyone considered putting gnome back? dropline has an alpha that seems to work properly with SW14.

hello Mark and glad to see you here,
Wanted to check if Porteus has a set of live scripts to create a distro?
unfortunately not but i recon that it shouldn't be a problem.
we use our current /boot and /porteus folders as a template for each new release and just replacing xzm modules with the new ones.
one more thing is to edit linuxrc and change porteus version from:

Code: Select all

SGN=porteus-v2.0-x86_64.sgn
to 2.x or 3.x.
(this step could be avoided by picking up some generic name like 'linux-live.sgn' but we want to be sure that users boot from the right version)
as you see the process is rather simple (no need to maintain a special kit for this purpose)
I'm considering using porteus as a base for my upgraded distro (like I used slax as base the first couple of times for it), but I can't find anything about how porteus is made.
re-branding should also be possible.
from linuxrc point of view it should be enough to change mentioned 'SGN=porteus-v2.0-x86_64.sgn' to 'SGN=bioslax.sgn' and also
every occurrence of 'porteus' with 'bioslax' (could be done with a sed command) if you want to keep data in /bioslax directory instead of /porteus.

EDIT:\\
as 'proof of concept' i have prepared a sample bioslax ISO:
http://www.4shared.com/file/TnUC4A59/bioslax.html

all what i did was to unpack initrd and issue 2 commands:

Code: Select all

sed -i linuxrc -e 's/porteus/bioslax/g'
sed -i linuxrc -e 's/Porteus/bioslax/g'
i have also renamed /porteus folder inside initrd to /bioslax and in top level of the ISO.
ofc i also renamed porteus-2.0-x86_64.sgn to bioslax-2.0-x86_64.sgn

that's it - bioslax is booting just fine :)
left to do is to fill /bioslax/base folder with your own modules, change /boot/syslinux/porteus.cfg and make all other re-branding.

Cheers

Wow - you are super fast. Thanks for this, will save me a lot of time!

I don't suppose you patched the kernels for bootsplash like before did you?

Thanks again.

@Mark
as you probably know bootsplash does not work with KMS drivers (intel, nouveau, radeon) so i did not include it in the kernel.
anyway - if i would be interested with a bootsplash then i would go with a plymouth instead.
kernel-3.7.x is able to load firmware directly from userspace so you wont even need an udev for this (some AMD cards needs a firmware to set mode setting correctly).
plymouth can also work with VESA driver in case when proprietary driver (nVidia, amd-catalyst) is loaded or user is booting in vbox/with non KMS capable GPU.
please check PCLinuxOS to see how attractive plymouth can be.

btw: we are not interested with a bootsplash as it's not worth the hassle to display animation for (literally) just a few seconds.
porteus used to boot really fast.

Wow, good to see some familiar old names here.
I know its probably taboo, but has anyone considered putting gnome back?
I am running from a mate desktop (gnome2) right now. I posted a module for both architectures somewhere. Search gnome desktop.

I am also releasing a 400-450Mb full blown version of Porteus running gnome desktop, libreoffice, vlc and other goodies. Seems very stable. I think creating a Porteus build script should not be that difficult. It would simply extract the required base packages from a running slackware, download and add the additional custom packages, run the cleanup scripts and create the iso. Sounds easy in theory. lol
How do i become super user?

Porteus boots uber fast, very impressive.

Looking at the rebranding now, will likely go with "BioPORTEUS" if I can get everything setup right. Only issue at the moment is splash. Bootsplash requires repacking of the initrfs which has to be done anyway, but that doesn't offer an easy way to switch splash screens and the annoying KMS keeps wiping out the splash screens, darn irritating.

@Fanthom,

So sorry, didn't see your post there - was refreshing the previous page, didn't realise a new page was in play! Silly me.

Plymouth is a good choice, but in reading, the setup with Slackware isn't all that straight forward. I was considering fbsplash as well. I understand the stand taken on splash since its just a few seconds, but in terms of branding it makes sense for us. Some of the entities that use our distro want their name on it and aside from making bio-modules for them, the branding becomes a source of funding (not much, but still). If you've seen the screen shots of bioslax you'll realise that even the 6 terminal consoles have splash screens (just like the old backtrack).

In any case, I will look at Plymouth again. Thanks.

@Brokenman

Thanks mate!

I'll be real interested to try your Gnome Porteus as well as your Gnome module. Will look for it in the forums!
