Version 1.2.1?

I am new here, but I read there is an update for version 1.2. Why not update the iso, and call it version 1.2.1? Maybe that is already planned.

It would also be helpful for new users if someone explained the steps for updating an existing installation.

hello heidi,
Why not update the iso, and call it version 1.2.1
we have decided to push kernel update instead of new 1.2.1 ISO as some bugs like:
a) Trinity needs recompilation with samba support
b) porteus gtk-tools does not recognize which bootloader was used during installation and always offer editing porteus.cfg (even for LILO)

are still unresolved.
no point for releasing bugfix ISO while known bugs are still there.

kernel update was needed immediately so we ended up with this update only.
It would also be helpful for new users if someone explained the steps for updating an existing installation.
update procedure is fairly simple.
all what you need to do is to download tar archive for your arch (32/64bit), unpack it and replace existing components from your porteus-1.2 setup with the new ones.

after a reboot please open terminal and run 'uname -a' command. if you find '3.4.9-porteus' string instead of '3.4.4-porteus' then update was done correctly.

in case of using proprietary drivers (nVidia/fglrx) or VirtualBox you also have to update them respectively (just replace old ones with new ones).

Cheers
Please add [Solved] to your thread title if the solution was found.

I have successfully updated.

Why don't you update the ISO, even if you still call it version 1.2 or 1.2a? It would save new users installing then updating. Unless you will have the other things done very soon, and you include them all.

By the way, what is crippled_sources-porteus-v1.2_update-i486-1ftm.xzm. Having that in the link confused me. Or should I be using that too?

These are basically the header files of the linux kernel, needed to compile programs that make use of them. Normally it is a stuff for developers like fanthom, brokenman, beny, Ahau and others who may wish to experiment with kernel-related libraries and applications.

Welcome an board heidi!

Cheers :)
