How to scan with porteus V5?

Post#1 by benjibasson » 04 Dec 2022, 20:17

Hi,
I would like toscan documents withe the scaner CANON F915800 on porteus v5 x64 XFCE
So I have downloaded both modules in /modules
http://dl.porteus.org/x86_64/Porteus-v5 ... -04-09.xzm
http://dl.porteus.org/x86_64/Porteus-v5 ... -07-02.xzm

and restart

then if I start -> grafics -> document scanner, the document scanner doesn't find anny scanner

if I run Xscan I get

Code: Select all

xscanimage: error while loading shared libraries: libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
On setting -> printer setting I am unable to find any device on USB ( no automatic searsh available)
On ubuntu 22.04 it work fine without any setting on Xscan but Ubuntu is too heavy for my PC.
What am I suppose to do to be abble to scan on porteus V5 please?

Cheers

Well I recommend you use only the 07-02 module and not the other one. The 04-09 is before Portues 5 was released.

While it worked out in the end for the user asking the question(erroneous cable) this

could still confuse other users lurking and relying on what they read in the forum.

You sure about that?
Both are in porteus/x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/modules and as seen by the file dates which slightly differ from the dates in the filenames:
Choosing http://linux.rz.rub.de/porteus/x86_64/P ... 0/modules/

Code: Select all

Index of /porteus/x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/modules

Icon Name Last modified Size [PARENTDIR] Parent Directory -
[ ] 07-printing-lxde-lxqt-openbox-xfce-x86_64-2022-04-09.xzm 2022-07-03 09:50 1.7M
[ ] 07-printing-x86_64-2022-07-02.xzm 2022-07-03 09:53 88M
The main server (where the mirrors get the files from) gives the same file dates:

Code: Select all

Index of /x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/modules/

../
001-core.xzm 03-Jul-2022 07:42 127496192
07-printing-lxde-lxqt-openbox-xfce-x86_64-2022-..> 03-Jul-2022 07:50 1785856
07-printing-x86_64-2022-07-02.xzm 03-Jul-2022 07:53 91992064
I added this time 001-core.xzm so that you can see all three file date/time stamps being 03-Jul-2022.
Or, as the mirror puts it, 2022-07-03 (YYYY-MM-DD)

Also, why would 07-printing-lxde-lxqt-openbox-xfce-x86_64-2022-04-09.xzm be offered in /x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/modules/ when it's not meant for Porteus-v5.0?

but still, the module 07-printing-lxde-lxqt-openbox-xfce-x86_64-2022-04-09.xzm is offered in /x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/modules/
Most users will presume that modules found in /x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/modules/ (or anywhere in /x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/ ) are for the use of Porteus-v5.0 finale version, or not?

If 07-printing-lxde-lxqt-openbox-xfce-x86_64-2022-04-09.xzm is not meant to be used for x86-64 Porteus 5.0 finale version then it should be removed.

If there needs to be a slightly updated version of 07-printing-lxde-lxqt-openbox-xfce-x86_64 (e.g. because dependencies are still missing) then that module needs to be uploaded somewhere into /x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/
Cheers!

If the 07-printing-lxde-lxqt-openbox-xfce-x86_64-2022-04-09.xzm works in the x86-64 Porteus 5.0 finale version then there's no reason to not leave it in the /x86_64/Porteus-v5.0/modules/ folder. Have you tested it Rava and found a problem with it?

It's not about me, an experienced Porteus user who can build (and did so in the past multiple times) his own dependency modules if needed, but the advice you gave to all reading this thread to not use a certain module.
Especially troubling when given as advice to a newbie to Porteus and a lurker who not registered here but takes your advice nonetheless for granted.

If you acknowledge that your above advice was erroneous, then edit your post, please.
And not to forget, prior you posting the above article (#2 in this thread) - did you follow your own advice you gave me?
E.g. when you tell others to not use a certain module, have you tested it Ed_P and found a problem with it?
Or did you just guess based on the date in its file name and given the advice to not use that module without testing your hypothesis yourself first?
Cheers!

So you seriously demand others to test if what they wrote here is correct, while holding yourself to none of these standards?

That says much about you.
