alternative scanner software

Hi all,
In some distributions, some scanners are not recognized
and then simple-scan and xsane will not work.
For example: In Knoppix 9.1, Kodachi and Porteus 5.0 my scanner "HP Photosmart 5510_ all_in_one" is not recognized.
(although libsane-hpaio and hplip are installed!)

In such cases, VueScan is an alternative.
VueScan has built-in drivers and seems to work everywhere.
It has many setting options and is intuitive to use.

But it is chargeable.
You can try it for free, but a big watermark will appear on the pages.

Vuescan indeed works for my HP LaserJet MFP m227-m231 flatbed scanner in network mode, whereas simple-scan 42.1 "sees" it but cannot scan: "unable to connect to scanner".
Simple-scan via an USB stick works.
Scanning on the device to a USB stick works.
:D

GIMP with QuiteInsane
GIMP was found to support almost all the common scanning devices.
look here:

Has anyone already used Gimp with with QuiteInsane?
