CDE for Porteus?
Hello,
It would be cool, if there was a CDE desktop for Porteus? Similarly to the one available on SparkyLinux. Any chances of this being possible, in future releases?

CDE for Porteus?
Hello neighbor. Based on the SparkyLinux Home page the CDE desktop looks like my Porteus Cinnamon desktop. Check out the Porteus desktop and let us know what you think.

CDE for Porteus?
I had a look at the CDE screenprint on the Sparky Linux website and it does not look like Cinnamon or any other recent desktop. It looks like I remember from using CDE on Solaris / HP-UX some 25+ years ago.
Indeed it might be interesting to know why dbranconnier wants this ancient desktop.

BTW: For me the Sparky Linux website always was and still is almost unusable slow. Am I the only one?

CDE for Porteus?

Other than the wallpaper it sure looks like my Porteus Cinnamon.

And wallpapers are user customizable so if you don't like water and a sunny sky change it to Sparky's blue.

It should be noted the Sparky DE image above is named XFCE, /images/7/thumbs3/sparky7-xfce.webp, not Cinnamon.

Well, I googled for "sparky cde" and found https://wiki.sparkylinux.org/doku.php/cdeBased on the SparkyLinux Home page the CDE desktop looks like my Porteus Cinnamon desktop.
I do not see what a "random" DE has to do with the user's question.

PS: The above may sound unfriendly -- please take no offence.

Ok, but that isn't the same as what dbran asked about.
Your Sparky link is interesting, a Linux version I've never seen before. Is it Slackware based like Porteus?
I agree so why did you post one.

The Sparky distribution you referred to has 4 download DEs: a LXQT, a MATE, a Xfce and a KDE. No images of what each look like.

I found no download links for the Home Roasted Third Party Desktops mentioned here: https://wiki.sparkylinux.org/doku.php/h ... y_desktops
Some desktop images are shown here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/sparkylinux/ And they look like my Cinnamon.

Dear Ed:
It was you that answered the user's question with the statement that some Sparky CDE stuff looked like your Porteus Cinnamon desktop. As you did not provide some visual details I googled for "sparky cde" and found a CDE image that certainly does not look like your Cinnamon.
In my humble opinion neither you nor I really answered the user's question.
Let us stop bickering.
Kind regards, Dick

No, I answered with the one word distribution that dbran referenced.
And when I searched for dbran's stated distribution, SparkyLinux, not a Sparky DE or cd, I saw the DE that looked like mine, as previously posted.
Yup, you did.
If he is looking for a DE similar to SparkyLinux's, I did offer a similar DE. If he's looking for an old CDE desktop, like the one shown in your Sparky WiFi link, I did not.
Attention to detail is important in solving/discussing technical/computer situations/questions.

I've enjoyed our discussing.

CDE for Porteus?
CDE (or more exactly now "NsCDE" : "Not so Common Desktop Environment") is available in the SBO : https://slackbuilds.org/repository/15.0/desktop/NsCDE/
actually, salix has it packaged so slapt-mod should grab any deps as well (looks like it uses fvwm for a window manager)
so, getting it working in porteus shouldn't be too difficult.. probably wouldn't make an official flavour with it though..
if i find the time to look at this, what target architecture are you looking for?
if you want the actual original CDE, that could be a little more challenging.. https://github.com/NsCDE/NsCDE discusses some reasons
EDIT: some links for the original:

Definitely not Cinnamon.

A good find ncmp.https://github.com/NsCDE/NsCDE?tab=readme-ov-file wrote:Visually, NsCDE mimics CDE, the well known Common Desktop Environment of many commercial UNIX systems of the nineties.

After doing a slapt-mod -u I see this:

CDE for Porteus?
That would be pretty cool! I’ve used SparkyLinux with the CDE desktop before, and it’s got a nice, classic feel to it. As for Porteus, I think it could definitely happen if there’s enough interest. I’d recommend mentioning it on their forums or keeping an eye on updates, since they’re pretty responsive to user feedback. It’d be nice to see more desktop options in future releases!
