Some useful settings for Firefox

Post#16 by Kulle » 19 Sep 2021, 07:53

I rarely use Firefox.
The .mozilla folder is located in /home/guest/

I used the Profilemaker https://ffprofile.com/
and I created my profile with the default settings that I want.

Result: profile.zip with folder "extensions" and file "prefs.js"
What do I have to do now?
I have no experience with configuring Firefox.
Thanks.

Type about:profiles in the url bar and click Open folder in your profile.
Next, close firefox, and move the folder "extensions" and file "prefs.js" there.

Start firefox.

Some useful settings for Firefox

Hi Eerie,
thanks very much.
but 4 (!) folders are displayed:

Profil: default-release

root folder /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/ms2c7vv4.default-release
local folder /home/guest/.cache/mozilla/firefox/ms2c7vv4.default-release

Profil: default

root folder /home/guest/.mozilla/firefox/ajlsvoas.default
local folder /home/guest/.cache/mozilla/firefox/ajlsvoas.default

What for, why, what differences?
Which folder should I open?
Thanks.

In the "about:profiles" page, there must be one marked as "in use". Should be this one.

Older version of Firefox used .default in place of .default-release, so if you have both it's probably because you have first installed Firefox before v67. The old .default profile was converted and copied to .default-release when you updated to Firefox 67.
Interesting !

For information, the choice of the starting for the profiles is saved in profiles.ini (/home/guest/.mozilla/firefox). You can edit it...

However, (firefox 92) I'm using my own "default" profile, since the "default-release" one is used for branding in my distro of choice.
The reason is I'm feeling safer creating my own profile without getting forced to use the likes of someone else's. (including default page, extensions/addons, certificates maybe, stored cookies...)

Again, from the "about:profiles" page, you'll be able to create, rename, delete, set the default one...

about:profiles

@Kulle
Whenever you've chosen your profile, open the *root* folder as pointed in the image above. (I.e. not the 'cache' local directory) and move the content of the .zip downloaded file there.
