The slax kernel is in 01-core.sb To get it , rename 01-core.sb to filesystem.xzm amd your can "extraxt" it with running porteus .

The snake is eating its tail:

I just now read into it (why is the thread not to be found on our forum?) and wonder: is there an attempt at creating a 003-fluxbox.xzm module for Port 5.0?

I do not know how minimal that DE (or more precise a WM) is - but at least it looks okay when going by the screenshots that are on its wikipedia entry on Fluxbox

This is what I found via https://duckduckgo.com/?q=Fluxbox+site% ... org&ia=web

Extra minimal. ready to add your preferred apps
basicaly fluxbox with conky

[32 bit stuff removed]

Download 64bit - https://app.box.com/s/6kf6hap0qe1rcfm1xh2z 8.6mb updated april 28 2015

sources and build instructions- https://github.com/ncmprhnsbl/fluxbox currently NOTup to date
is 7+ years old.

Has anyone tried creating a recent fluxbox for Port 5 x86-64?

It could be interesting for people who need temporarily a more resources friendly WM for running some planned heavy on CPU and GPU tasks instead of the usual DE.

Also, maybe interesting for i586 systems due to the restrictions of these systems (CPU much more restricted when it comes to real multitasking than any x 86-64 capable system)
Cheers!

I think this mix from first post may not work with current Ubuntu or requires much more tricks. Furthermore the size of every K-, L-, X-... ubuntu.iso/filesystem.squashfs is disadvantageous.
You have mind and feelings. Be wise and clever.

I think i refrain from experimenting on ubun2porteus then and leave that to others :D

… if anyone is still willing doing so. After considering your above words carefully .

@rava:
Here is the link directly to porteus forum.
New Slax is Coming !
You just had to use a long sentence of the thread and google it.

All the info or some info of porteus forum is used by a site called feedreader.com.

@rava:

I think that you could work it out better than me with the first thread. Fanthom for sure, but also ncmprhnsbl and tome are able to do so. Brokenman also for sure. But if they do not come to help with the job, at least we could try.

Let us analyse the first thread post and put it to date with:
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
III and IV Should be the same as in first post.
hi have a nice day
im new in linux and porteus. I usually use linux mint
I tried this system. but on the login screen, it didn't auto login. Can you explain step by step how to do the above-mentioned operations III and IV?

Hi mcaner. Any reason why you're not trying a straight Porteus 5.0 ISO and what type of hardware are you using?

porteus boots very fast. but it is a little difficult for me to use. I'm a regular mint user, not an expert linux user.
but it's nice to try different distros. so i am making a multiboot disk. some being persistent. and porteus' permanent system is better than linux mint's in my opinion. so i want to use it in linux mint.

In what way? What version of Porteus are you using? I've never used linux mint so I don't know how to compare Porteus to it but my Porteus Cinnamon is very functional as a GUI desktop and boots to guest automatically.

ok ok. I did not write here for the discussion of which distribution is easy, difficult, good or bad. just one question. How to define password within porteus for mint root user? Could you tell me step by step the third part of the incident described at the beginning of this title? if you will help.
Thank you in advance for your help.

I presume you mean this part?

III. Proposed patches via xzm module, extramod=, changes= or rootcopy= cheatcodes:
1. Set root password within Porteus for Ubuntu (/etc/shadow from filesystem.squashfs -rw-r-----; root:gdm).
I can only speak for Porteus, not for Linux Mint.

In Porteus, I suggest the following:
Choose your DE (Desktop Environment)
Boot it either by individually copying the base modules onto a USB thumbdrive as described in the readme's , or boot it via ISO.
Make the change in the running system via opening a root terminal and type

Code: Select all

passwd root
The prompt you get is this:

Code: Select all

New password:
After confirming the password, the new password is stored in /etc/shadow
In my system the old original /etc/shadow looks like so

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/Lsfind# ls -l /etc/shadow
-rw-r--r-- 1 root shadow 779 2019-12-07 06:40 /etc/shadow
after a Password change to a more secure root password it looks like so:

Code: Select all

root@porteus:/Lsfind# ls -l /etc/shadow
-rw-r--r-- 1 root shadow 755 2023-01-11 18:43 /etc/shadow
Create a module out of /etc/shadow - again as root do all this:

Code: Select all

mkdir /tmp/999-root-password
cp -av --parents /etc/shadow /tmp/999-root-password
dir2xzm /tmp/999-root-password /tmp/999-root-password.xzm
When using an ISO, you can remaster the ISO by adding 999-root-password.xzm to porteus/modules
When using a USB thumbdrive with the extracted individual modules, just copy 999-root-password.xzm to porteus/modules.
Reboot.

And it doesn't hurt to copy 999-root-password.xzm to a 2nd place for safekeeping for when anything went wrong you still have it and can add it once more to your system.
Cheers!
Yours Rava
