Donating Slackware repositories - thanks for the job you do!

Post#1 by fanthom » 27 Nov 2014, 20:57

Porteus as a project does pretty well from a financial point of view. We have paid 600$ for the hosting service and were still able to gather over 1.2k USD in our PayPal account so far this year. This money comes from direct donations from Porteus users and DuckDuckGo revenue share. We would like to take the opportunity to thank you once again for your support.

As you know we do not maintain an xzm module repository ourselves but rely on Slackware repositories spread all over the world and unified in our USM package manager. This approach lets us avoid double maintenance of packages and lowers overhead on our side.
The reality is that packages do not come from nowhere. Someone has to create them, make sure they are linked against libraries included in the parent Slackware project, check if they are working properly, fix reported bugs, etc... This is a tough job and requires a lot of effort for the repository maintainers. We wouldn't be here without their work and we feel we should give something back.

We have decided to donate 50$ to each of the repositories included in USM (listed in alphabetical order):

AlienBob (Eric Hameleers) - 50$
Ponce (Matteo Bernardini) - 50$
Salix Linux (salix.org) - 50$
Slackware (slackware.com)- 50$
Slacky (slacky.eu) - 50$
-----------------------------
Total: 250$

This is a one time donation but if our financial situation permits, then we would like to repeat it every year.

Thank you guys!
