Porteus-v5.1-alpha2

Post#1 by ncmprhnsbl » 27 Mar 2025, 03:59

Announcing the release of the second alpha release of the upcoming 5.1 version, based on a snapshot of slackware current.
Mainly for some bug fixes and not getting too far behind slackware current.

Download from your favourite mirror: http://porteus.org/porteus-mirrors.html (in the x86_64/Porteus-v5.1 folder)
If you're manually updating an existing install, the modules are in x86_64/Porteus-v5.1/modules and the kernel in x86_64/Porteus-v5.1/kernel.
Note: some mirrors may not be fully synced at the time of posting.

Of note:
Kernel 6.14 (thanks to Blaze)
Pipewire now started by script for faster(and maybe more reliable) startup (particularly for cinnamon).
fastest-mirror script now handles slackware and salix mirrors as well as porteus mirrors. see: `fastest-mirror -h` for usage
getpkg now uses the slackware mirror set by fastest-mirror (or a local mirror if not set)
getpkg now downloads packages from slackware current by default (.ie no module produced) see `getpkg -h` for all options.
Added getmod, a symlink to getpkg which causes it to produce modules from downloaded packages.
Replaced script: browser-update with update, that enables easier addition (or removal) of new live scripts. see `update help` for choices and usage.
Adapted gtk-browser-update gui to use update for some of the available choices.
Added install-skeleton.tar.xz to the server: an archive of the iso base files without modules or kernel that could be used for manual or scripted installs.
Added xfce4-screensaver to xfce4 DE mainly for it's screenlocking feature.
