PorteuX 1.8 has been released

This release introduces the long-awaited Xfce 4.20, along with updates to almost all desktop environments. The kernel has been updated to 6.12.5, but there appear to be some upstream performance regressions for AMD users in specific cases (1 and 2), so if you experience some of these issues, you can use the kernel from PorteuX 1.7.

1. Fixed vm.max_map_count not being set during boot
2. Fixed extensions not installing in Cinnamon if 05-devel was not activated
3. Fixed KDE 6 night light feature not working
4. Improved support for Steam Deck
5. Improved PorteuX installer for Linux to only ask for admin rights instead of root user
6. Improved all scripts in /opt/porteux-scripts to only ask for admin rights instead of root user
7. Improved getpkg to have -m parameter to convert downloaded packages to xzm modules
8. Improved boot/docs/install.txt to inform that zstd is required (some distros like Fedora don't include it by default)
9. Improved 001-core stripping
10. Moved bc and hwdata to 05-devel
11. Removed from 001-core: cracklib and libpwquality
12. Removed from 002-gui: archivemount and libmng
13. Removed magic folders support -- it was never fully implemented
14. Updated kernel to 6.12.5
15. Updated Cinnamon to 6.4.2 (current only)
16. Updated GNOME to 47.2 (current only)
17. Updated KDE to 6.2.4 (current only, thanks to LuckyCyborg)
18. Updated LXQt to 2.1.0 (current only)
19. Updated Xfce to 4.20 (current only)
20. Updated many packages in both stable and current according to Slackware updates

Hi Porteux, I've been using KDE Plasma a lot lately and I have to say the system works very well, the graphics on the desktop are a little less so, everything that comes on the video is blurred and it's tiring for the eyes, I don't think it's KWIN-WAYLAND, with slackware the monitor it works well, is there a way to have a clearer desktop, thank you

Well done, wifi BCM4313 and Radeon work fine on porteux-v1.8-current-xfce-4.20-x86_64. Thanks Porteux for your hardwork.

Is there a way to activate Auto Numlockx On?

@beny, I'm not sure about the blurry video. Are you using fractional scaling? You can also try to logout and login in a X11 session to compare.

@Otto, this is related to the desktop environment you're using.

Hi porteux,
I downloaded
chromium-developer-1402203-x86_64-de.xzm via PorteuX App Store
But Chromium doesn't work (missing dependencies):

Code: Select all

guest@porteux:~$ chromium-developer
chromium-developer: error while loading shared libraries: libavahi-common.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I cannot replicate this on current or stable:

Any bug you found, before reporting please test in Always Fresh mode first.

Thank you porteux,
You are correct, chromium works in "always fresh" mode.

However, when I add the two printer modules that Blaze recommended, chromium no longer functions.
See here:

Code: Select all

guest@porteux:~$ ls /mnt/live/memory/images
000-kernel-6.12.5.xzm/
001-core-stable-20241215.xzm/
002-gui-stable-20241215.xzm/
002-xtra-stable-20241215.xzm/
003-xfce-4.18-stable-20241215.xzm/
07-printing-x86_64-2025-01-01.xzm/
07-printing-xfce-x86_64-2025-01-01.xzm/
chromium-developer-1402203-x86_64-de.xzm/
guest@porteux:~$ chromium-developer
chromium-developer: error while loading shared libraries: libavahi-common.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
guest@porteux:~$
Conclusion: The printer modules from Blaze are causing the error.
This is probably why I have not been able to install my printer so far.
See here:
After upgrading from PorteuX 0.4 to PorteuX 1.8 : Printer doesn't print

I will likely need to use older printer modules.
I will consult Blaze.
The transition from PorteuX 0.4 to Porteux 1.8 is turning into a torment.

Not agree about printing module. Did you tested it in AF mode?

Hi Blaze,
yes, I tested in "ALWAYS FRESH" mode.
See above,
additionally only the printer modules were activated.

I have narrowed down the error even further.
the module 07-printing-x86_64-2025-01-01.xzm is causing the error.

Question: which printer modules should I use as an alternative now?

Well did you tested it in AF mode without printer modules?

Hi Blaze,
As already described above:
Chromium works in "always fresh" mode.
If I also activate the printer module 07-printing-x86_64-2025-01-01.xzm, Chromium no longer works.
Error message:
error while loading shared libraries: libavahi-common.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

In PorteuX 0.4 stable Xfce 4.16 I used 07-printing-x86_64-2023-04-22.xzm.
Unfortunately does not work in Porteux 1.8 stable Xfce 4.18
Why?
Which printer module should I use in PorteuX 1.8 stable Xfce 4.18?
