Maybe it would be better for beginners in iso by default autologin to be disabled
And screensaver to be set by default with pasword
I don't agree, especially for beginners.
I agree to both points with Ed_P here, but I would welcome if there are kernel cheatcodes that would tweak PorteuX into making these changes.

I presume the nonauto-login already exist as cheatcode, but I also presume the screensaver to be set by default with password does not yet exist as cheatcode?
Cheers!

start in txt mode so you don't have trouble with autologin, you can append the changes directory of you want changes activated, and maybe work also the password on screensaver,i can't confirm now the next week i am at home......autologin is only if you boot at init 4 using txt mode you have to do the manual login guest or root, and you can put a password also at syslinux boot stage if you like....

I have porteuX on a USB device
The boot time until the message "Entering runlevel 4"
only takes a few seconds.

But after that it takes a long time until the DE Xfce appears (33 seconds)
Can this be sped up?

Does porteux support the "3" kernel cheatcode so that you always boot into init mode 3 as does Porteus?

I prefer it that way as well, it takes a mere seconds to manually log in as guest and then type

Code: Select all

startx
but gives you much more control, also you can scroll up in the 1st terminal and review all boot messages even when they are already scrolled outside of the visible screen, something you cannot do when you boot into your XWindows and your chosen DE.

Added in 3 minutes 59 seconds:
Cave! The scrolling up only works when you did not change to a different virtual terminal ("VT"). When you stay in one virtual terminal you can scroll up to see much more output of current program or from boot, but when you change the VT you can only access what is currently seen, all that is scrolled up is gone.

for those who do not know, scrolling up or scrolling down in a VT is done via

Code: Select all

Shift + PageUp
or

Code: Select all

Shift + PageDown
Cheers!

@roro, 33 seconds seems a lot indeed. Have you tried in always fresh to compare?

Hi porteux,

No significant difference between "graphical" and "fresh"

Hi roro txt mode,no fresh, and with this line you can see the refresh of the certificate of directory first, after you can login.

@roro, are you using stable or current? This performance issue also affect Porteus 5? Is your USB stick connected to a USB 3 port? Can you benchmark it using gnome-disks?

I presume my md5sum is correct?

Code: Select all

ccafd9965d6a623d6ad1e098bcb4b33a gnome-disk-utility-42.0-x86_64-1_SBo.xzm
https://duckduckgo.com/?q=%22gnome-disk ... oon&ia=web
No results found for "gnome-disk-utility-42.0-x86_64-1_SBo.xzm" site:forum.porteus.org.

@porteux is there a way to tell gnome-disks to only show the physical disks and ignore all the modules it is listing?

Code: Select all

guest@rava:/usr/man/man1$ ls gnome-disk*
gnome-disk-image-mounter.1 gnome-disks.1
guest@rava:/usr/man/man1$ grep -i ignore gnome-disk*
guest@rava:/usr/man/man1$
The man pages are not giving anything helpful.
Cheers!
